Notes from John Travis, contemporary historian

John Marland, cotton and worsted roller turner, about 1812 was at the workshop at Higher Dobroyd, Todmorden. Afterwards they moved to WATERSTALLS then moved to STRINES MILL. His son John junior later erected Sun Vale Works. He and his sons built an iron foundry and machine shop and started making power looms and other machinery. John finished and the business continued under his sons, trading as Jonas Marland and Bros. At first the demand was greater than they could meet but by about 1867 the firm got into difficulties and the works stood still for a considerable time. It was then sold to Ormerod Taylor and converted into a chemical manufacturing concern.
