HOW TO SELL A HOUSE IN 1793

The following bill of sale and details of the bidding at an auction is dated 1793. The original document is held at the West Yorkshire Archives (Calderdale) in Halifax, along with the deeds for this house from 1785 to 1842.

It seems that Thomas Dawson was the tenant of the house and that he tried to buy it for himself, but was out bidded. Thomas was a shopkeeper at Knowlwood.

26th June 1793

John Taylor of Knowlwood, Cotton Weaver, hath agreed to sell and convey and John Crowther of Midgelden, Stone Mason, hath agreed to purchase and take conveyance of a leasehold messuage and dwelling house, garden and other premises in Knowlwood now in the occupation of Thomas Dawson, at the price of one hundred pounds.
