Joseph and Jane (Gibson) HILL

Great-Great-great-Grandparents of Daniel L. Todden

Joseph, born May 6, 1879 in Pennsylvania, said to be one of at least three brothers whose parentage has not been identified. The brothers, possibly with others of their family, moved to Ohio, then on to Spencer Co., Indiana.

He married Jane Gibson, May 4, 1815, in Washington Co., Ohio. Joseph and Jane had eight or nine children, all born in Ohio.

Joseph died October 4, 1853 in Spencer Co., Indiana. Jane is said to have died in 1870, but I have not identified her on any census after 1850.

      George Hill (1824-1908)

      George, a son of Joseph and Jane (Gibson) Hill, was born in 1824 while the family was living in Ohio. The obituary that follows shows a life of an adventurous man who struck out on his own at an early age, leaving home and family behind. From his occupation as miner on the 1850 census, we can suppose that he went to California seeking gold, as did many of that era. Other occupations in his long life inclused farmer and carpenter.

      He married, in 1853, Nancy Arema, described in family lore as an "Indian maiden". George and Nancy had one daughter, Maria, born in 1857.

      George died in1908, living then in Westport, Mendocino Co., California. Nancy's death is not known.

      Obituary

      	"Mr. George Hill was born in Ripple, Brown Co., Ohio, August 10, 1824.
      	He moved from there with his parents in 1832 and settled in Rockport, Spencer Co.,Indiana.
      	He lived there with his people until 1846 when he, being 22 years of age and thought himself able to make his own way in the world, moved out to Illinois, but stayed there only two years and turned to California, leaving his home in the spring, traveled across the plains that summer and arrived in Placerville in the fall of the same year.
      	He stayed there two years and moved to Humbolt County in 1853 and was married to Miss Nancy Arema the same year.
      	On the 6th of February 1875, he came with his family to Kibesillah and, after living there two years, settled at Westport, where he has resided ever since.
      	Mr. Hill was converted to the Christian religion under the preaching of a Cumberland Presbyterian minister in 1847 while in Illinois and was baptised byRrev. Mr. James in Wages Creek, January 28, 1908. 
      	He died at the ripe age of 83 years, 5 months and 18 days.  The funeral service was conducted at the church and was largely attended by his many old friends.  He leaves a wife, one daughter, Mrs. Fry, and several grandchildren.
