First Generation in America

1. PETER DEFFENBACH1 was born between 1755 and 1774 [1800 census] in Germany [1880 census]. He died in 1805 at Allegany Co., Maryland.

Peter married Magdalene (____).

The earliest record of Peter is his purchase of land from Moses Rawlings in a deed dated 6 Sep 1790. In that deed Peter Deverboh of Washington Co., Maryland, bought land in Washington Co., (now Allegany Co.) Maryland [Deed book G, pages 237-8]. He apparently had a brother John who is mentioned in the records of his estate.

In a letter John R. Diffinbaugh wrote to George L. Irgang, dated 16 Jan 1928, he wrote "The name in American English is Diffinbaugh as I have it. Peter Devorboh, the pioneer of our race in Maryland, from where our people migrated to many sections since, was direct from Germany; and came here about 1780."

5. BENJAMIN DEFFENBAUGH2 (Peter1), son of Peter and Magdalene Deffenbach, was born about 1783 at Pennsylvania [1850 federal census]. He died on 22 Nov 1850 at Allegany Co., Maryland.

Benjamin married Margaret Jane "Jennie" Robertson. Margaret died on 5 Feb 1856.

In 1814 Benjamin Deverbaugh was a private in Captain McLaughlin's Company of infantry from Allegany Co., Maryland. The company went to Baltimore and joined the First Regiment of the Maryland Militia on 11 Aug 1814. They served until 13 Oct when the company was mustered out, returned to the county, and disbanded. [Lowdermilk, Will H. History of Cumberland (Maryland), 1878, p. 296]

Benjamin wrote his will 12 Oct 1850.

6. ANDREW DEFFENBAUGH2 (Peter1), son of Peter and Magdalene Deffenbach, was born on 2 Feb 1785. He died on 27 Mar 1843 at McLean Co., Illinois. He is buried at the Deffenbaugh Family Cem., Empire Twp., McLean Co., Illinois.

Andrew married Harriett Robertson (her last name is not proven) at Allegany Co., Maryland. Harriett was born on 15 Mar 1796 at Maryland. She died on 10 Nov 1856 at the Deffenbaugh Family Cem., Empire Twp., McLean Co., Illinois.

Andrew first appears in 1810 when he is listed as Andrew Devibaugh in the Allegany Co., Maryland, federal census.  During the War of 1812, Andrew Deverbaugh was a corporal in Ragan's 1st Regiment of the Maryland Militia.  Andrew and Harriett moved their family from Allegany Co., Maryland, to Hopewell Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, in 1819. In 1837 they moved to Empire Twp., McLean Co., Illinois.

Mary married Thomas Wilson on 8 Feb 1816 at Allegany Co., Maryland. Abisha was born between 1790 and 1794 Maryland. He died between 1860 and 1870.

The Dannison family moved to Hopewell Township, Perry Co., Ohio, before 1820. Mary was still living there when the census was taken in 1880, she stated her father was born in Germany.

Betsey married Griffin Twigg on 14 Apr 1818 at Allegany Co., Maryland. Griffin was born about 1795 at Maryland. He died between 1860 and 1870.

The Twiggs lived in Allegany Co., Maryland, through 1870.

Peter married Mary Catherine "Kate" Mountz on 23 Dec 1851 at Town Creek, Allegany Co., Maryland. Mary, sister of Eliza Lavinia (Mountz) Deffenbaugh, was born on 18 Jan 1831 at Maryland. She died on 22 Jun 1902 at Preston, West Virginia. She was buried on 24 Jun 1902 at Deakins Cemetery, Rowlesburg, West Virginia.

Peter and Kate were Episcopalian.

15. ARCHIBALD DEFFENBAUGH3 (Andrew2, Peter1), son of Andrew and Harriett (Robertson) Deffenbaugh, was born 20 Jan 1812 [Tombstone] at Allegany Co., Maryland. He died 6 Nov 1879 [Tombstone] at Missouri. He is buried in California City Cemetery, California, Moniteau Co., Missouri.

Archibald married Hester Caroline Miller in 1837 at Illinois. Hester was born 5 Oct 1819 [Tombstone 68Y. 1M. 5D.] at Illinois. In the 1880 census she stated her parents were born in Pennsylvania. She died 10 Nov 1887 [Tombstone]. She is buried in California City Cemetery, California, Moniteau Co., Missouri.

When he was seven years old [1819] Archibald moved with his parents to Perry Co., Ohio. He moved again with his parents. This time to McLean Co., Illinois, in 1837. He was 25. Archibald was a farmer, but in the 1860 census he listed his occupation as "colporture." A colporteur is "a peddler of books" or "a person employed to travel about distributing Bibles, religious tracts, etc., gratuitously or at a low price." [The Random House College Dictionary] Archibald moved west again about the year 1867. This time at about the age of 55 he moved his family to Cooper Co., Missouri.

She apparently died on 27 Dec 1851 at Logan Co., Illinois.  She is buried at Bowers-Templeman Cem., Logan Co., Illinois.

Mary married John William VanDeventer on 21 Feb 1837 at McLean Co., Illinois. John was born 19 Jan 1815 at Claiborne Co., Tennessee. He died 12 Jan 1866. He is buried at Bowers-Templeman Cem., Logan Co., Illinois.

John was living in Logan Co., Illinois, by 1840, where he and his family were listed in the 1840, 1850, and 1860 federal census for that county. John married Margaret Sharp Craig on 13 Mar 1855 at McLean Co., Illinois.  She was born 15 Mar 1824 at Nicholas Co., Kentucky. She died in 1900 at Logan Co., Illinois.  They had at least one son.

17. OTHO DEFFENBAUGH3 (Andrew2, Peter1), son of Andrew and Harriett (Robertson) Deffenbaugh, was born in 1814 at Maryland. He died on 22 Sep 1898 at McLean Co., Illinois. Otho is buried in Oak Grove Cemetery at Empire Twp., McLean Co., Illinois.

Otho married Mary Jane Barr in 1844 at McLean Co., Illinois. Mary was born on 21 Jul 1823 at Virginia. She died on 9 Nov 1845 at Illinois. She is buried in Old Oak Grove Cemetery at Empire Twp., McLean Co., Illinois.

Andrew married Susan Elizabeth Hall on 30 Dec 1847 at McLean Co., Illinois. Susan was born in 1829. She died on 14 Oct 1848. She is buried in Oak GroveCemetery at Empire Twp., McLean Co., Illinois.

Andrew married, second, Sarah E. Chappell on 22 Oct 1853 at McLean Co., Illinois. Sarah was born in 1835 at Ohio. She may have died in Apr 1882. She is buried at Logan Co., Illinois.

"Andrew J. ... settled in the southern part of Atlanta Township[, Logan Co., Illinois,] in the fall of 1861, where he has since made his home. He has been very successful in his farming pursuits, and is now the owner of 630 acres of land. He was bereft by the loss of his wife in April, 1882. [Note: in the 1880 census he was listed as a widower] In politics he affiliates with the Democratic party." [History of Logan Co., Illinois, 1886, page 571]

22. JOHN ALEXANDER DEFFENBAUGH3 (Peter2, Peter1), son of Peter and Ellenore (Robertson) Deffenbaugh, was born 19 Jul 1808 at Allegany Co., Maryland. He died 12 Mar 1852.

John married Delilah Alderton on 27 Jul 1833 at Allegany Co., Maryland. Delilah, daughter of Enos and Mary Alderton, was born about 1816 at Virginia. She died 15 Mar 1899.

During the Civil War Sylvester, Harrison and Oliver joined the 2nd Regiment, Maryland Infantry, Potomoc Home Brigade, fighting for the Union.  The burden of operating the farm fell on 12 year old John.  After the war, on 24 July 1866 when he wrote his will their grandfather Peter Deffenbaugh bequeathed $50 to the four boys be divided among them.  All four eventually became railroaders.

Theodore married Keziah Clendennen on 29 Jul 1852. Keziah was born on 8 Aug 1835 at Fairfield Co., Ohio.

Theodore served in Co. H, 15th Indiana Volunteer Infantry during the Civil War.

Elizabeth married Luther Martin on 27 Jan 1845 at Allen Co., Indiana. Luther was born at Maryland. He died on 10 Mar 1892 at Geneva, Allen Co., Indiana.
