2. EDWARD CLARK was born ca. 1622 in Ipswich or Haverhill, Sfflk, England. HE married DORCAS BOSWORTH, daughter of Hanniel Bosworth (d. 25 Sep 1683). Dorcas died 13 Feb 1681 in Haverhill, Mass. Edward married second in 1682 to Mary Johnson. Edward died 1710 in Haverhill.

Third Generation

MATHEW CLARK(3) was born in Haverhill, Mass. He married 2 Apr 1679 to MARY DOW, daughter of Thomas and Phebe Dow. Mary was widow of Gilbert Wilford. Mathew was a ship builder and carpenter in Haverhill. He believed that timber for ships should not be cut across the grains or spliced. Therefore gave up shipbuilding when others built that way.

SATCHEL CLARK(23) was born 15 Mar 1736 in Kingston, NH. He married RACHEL CATE. She was born in 1737 in Greenland, NH. Satchel was a blacksmith. He served in the Revolutionary War and to have been 'sick during the battle of Bennington, in a meeting-house, on a pile of knapsacks, but within plain hearing of the guns'. He died 4 May 1809, age 73 and she died 15 Aug 1820, age 83.

TAYLOR CLARK(32) was born 10 May 1763. He married 8 Apr 1784 to MARY (MOLLY) HAINES, daughter of David and Lydia Cate Haynes/Haines. Taylor's mother Rachel Cate and Mary's mother Lydia Cate were sisters. Taylor was a deacon and highly esteemed and influential member of the First Baptist Church. Mary died 2 Oct 1845 and he died 1 Aug 1853.

DAVID CLARK(36) was born 17 Sep 1772. He married 3 Sep 1799 to SUSANNAH DEARBORN, daughter of Edward and Susanna Brown Dirburn/Deerborn (they were m. 2 Nov 1770 in Kensington, Rcknghm, NH). When they first settled in Sanbornton she had 'no place to hang out clothes on account of the burnt trees'. They lived together more than 61 years, 'exhibiting by their daily deportment and social teachings a blending of the parental relations.' David died 16 Feb 1861 and Susannah died 26 Nov 1861 in Sanbornton, NH.

DAVID JR. CLARK(42) was born 5 Jan 1793. He married 2 Feb 1824 to ABIGAIL PHILBRICK, daughter of John Philbrick. She was born 8 Jun 1798 in Hampton, NH. David was a blacksmith nearly fifty years, losing two shops by fire, the latter never having been replaced. He claimed to have made the first steel pen in the country (1807).

TAYLOR JR CLARK(52) was born 9 Apr 1788. He married first 21 Nov 1811 to NANCY SANBORN, daughter of Josiah Sanborn. She died 16 Jun 1820. He married second 15 Mar 1821 Lovey Shaw, daughter of John Shaw. He enlisted after his first marriage, 12 Oct 1814 for 60 days, in Capt. Chase Perkin's Co. and was discharged 10 Nov 1814. Taylor was a farmer. He died 17 Oct 1828.

DAVID WASHINGTON CLARK(63) was born 31 Aug 1808 in Sanbornton, NH. He married 13 Dec 1832 to CELESTIA CLARK(73). She was born 22 Aug 1813. He died 12 Feb 1873 in East Tilton, NH after a long and distressing illness, from a cancer, borne with uncommon resignation and patience. 'A large circle of friends mourned his loss, and those who knew him best lamented him most'. Celestia died 17 Jun 1890 in Tilton.

Eleventh Generations



EDITH JEWETT CLARK(91) married LELAND THORTON CHURCHILL. Her daughter Frances Churchill Cate wrote to me that "My mother was very affectionate...Without any exception my mother was the most generous person I ever met to her family and friends, too. She didn't sew or read very much...My mother loved people. She won a gold locket as a prize in roller skating--she was a very good skater." Edith was also a good cook.
