December 1985
Merry Christmas
The way things have been going, it looks like half of us are going to have a very White Christmas and the other half are going to be laughing! Hope you all have a joyful season.
There were so many interesting items I wanted to include in this issue, I really had a time deciding! It's wonderful to receive contributions from the membership. Thank you, Charles T., for the 1981 article on Grindstone Island (which will appear in the next issue of Gotham Ties) and Verna McAvoy, who sent in the photocopy of Elizabeth King Gotham's death certificate.
Speaking of membership, a breakdown (by ancestor) appears on the back page, for anyone interested.
It was nice hearing from Flora King, who concurred with my 'Informal Survey' & hypothesis. Seems I'm on the right track when I assume that genealogists also enjoy crosswords, puzzles and mysteries.
It is with regret that Helen Craig informs her friends and this readership of the death of her husband of 45 years. Kenneth A. (Bunk) Craig, Sr. born 21 Aug 1917, died 22 Oct 1985 of a massive heart attack. He was the son of Armena Adams Craig and great-grandson of James C. and Fidella Gotham Howe. Helen says, "I am doing better than I ever thought I could but I have not had time or heart for genealogy. I do want to let my genealogy friends know and will get back to working on it soon. " Our deepest sympathies, Helen........
It would be interesting and informative if it was known which 'missing link' each of you are researching. Perhaps we could coordinate efforts. Make a New Year's Resolution. Let us hear from you?
Best Wishes in 1986!

??? MYSTERY ???
. .IS SHE OR ISN'T SHE Solomon's daughter?
To be sure, a 'Nancy' was born to Solomon on 30 Jan 1825 (see Family Bible records reproduced in the August issue. p.7) but did this Nancy live to maturity? Slate Family Reunion records(?) show a Nancy J., born 30 Jan 1825, daughter of Henry, Jr. (Solomon's brother) as marrying William GLOYD. To add to the confusion, the 1840 census of Clayton reports that Solomon had a 15 year old daughter. Was this our Nancy? And last, but not least, the "Jefferson County Genealogical and Historical Record" in giving a summation on the Aldridge Stetson KENDALL family, does not list a 'Nancy' as a sibling of his wife, Zuba. (Brother David, Roswell, Solomon E., and sister Dolly are not mentioned, either!)
Stay tuned for the next issue! If documented verification of Nancy J.'s paternity is received, we may (or may not) have to remove the surname of GLOYD from our cover page logo - the GOTHAM TIES bow and its strings!

A Library Tool: The 'VISUAL TEK'
While touring our local library, I was introduced to a new machine whose primary purpose is to aid the visually impaired: the Visual Tek. As a genealogist, its redeeming qualities became immediately obvious to me and I'd like to share them with you.
The Visual Tek is similar in appearance to a microfilm reader (of the modern variety). It can rest on a desk top. In patronizing the machine, a person would bring a letter (whose writing is perhaps difficult to read) and place it under a glass plate situated to one side of the machine's large screen. Turning on the machine, the patron has the options of magnifying the troublesome wording or reversing the image (instead of black ink on white paper, the screen now shows a black background and the writing is white). It is also possible to isolate a word or phrase or sentence (as much or as little as desired) through the use of blackout technology.
As the Visual Tek is not limited in its usefulness to the visually impaired, so to it can find purpose in magnifying old photographs (for that hard-to-recognize ancestor) besides reading difficult letters. At our library, the use of this machine is free - and rarely used. Perhaps your local library has a similar machine?

"The goals of the Association are to promote research and to preserve the history of our families. We are using previously published books and manuscripts as a basis of our files with additional material submitted by our members and any other interested person. Continuing research by our members is the vital part of the compilation of material for future publication.
There are several publications about our families which need to be updated and corrected. Due to the large number of descendants of the early immigrant ancestors of this surname, we have a sizeable amount of information in our Master Files on individuals who have not been connected to one of the early Morrill ancestors. We intend to publish new genealogies on the various families. Each new member is asked to submit FGS on their lines. This material is indexed and filed into our Master Files. Lineages of our members are published in the Newsletter.
The Newsletter is our means of communication and researching tool. Any information concerning our surname is desired. Back issues of the newsletter are available. (Has been in existence 5 years) Our Master Index File has over 6000 entries from various sources which have been submitted or researched by our members. However, it does not include the major publications on Abraham of Salisbury, MA; John of Kittery, ME; or Thomas of Long Island, NY... There are over 6000 names in these publications alone. "
