The Brown Mansion in Brownville ,Jefferson County, New York is steeped in a very large amount of history. Some very well known people have either lived there or been guest there. The old ballroom downstairs is now the museum and sometimes in the middle of the night you can still hear the echo of laughter and music from the 1700's. The sounds of people talking and the rustle of ballroom gowns made from a satin finish can be heard also the shuffle of many feet as the ghost of years ago dance around the ball room floor. There are other times a baby's cry can be heard coming from this same room and a mother singing a low lullaby to hush the crying infant. There is an old fashion cradle of that time period next to a spinning wheel in the museum that has long, long ago been placed there. There was a time in the early 1970's that my family lived on the top floor of the Brown Mansion as caretakers while my dad worked for the Village. I was there one Christmas visiting when my grandmother told me "If you see a young women in an old fashion gingham dress wearing an old fashion sun bonnet. Don't be afraid of her for she won't bother you she just watches over us. She usually comes into the kitchen where I will be washing dishes on Sunday's, while I am by myself and your folks are gone." I didn't get to see her on that trip because as most spirits don't always come out with a lot of people around and my mother although she was from the same Irish background didn't like such things. My grandmother always said my mother was afraid of them.
