Pioneering to Alaska By Trailer

From the diary of Grace M. Dickinson

This is an article published in Trailer Travel magazine for May 1948. It is taken from my mothers diary for 1947 when My mom & dad (Leon & Grace Dickinson),grandparents (Arthur & Marjorie Vincent)my sister (Nancy) and myself (Thelma) went to Alaska where we lived for the next two years. The complete story will be under diaries when I get them typed in.

Foreword by Mrs. Monty Hey:The Dickinson's and we are from New York State,so we struck up an acquaintance in the trailer camp in Edmonton last summer. They and others mentioned in the diary were waiting to get their permit to travel the Alcan, and were buying the necessary supplies for the long trip north. This was the most interesting camp we have ever been in, and folks were truly pioneers. Whether they were going to Alaska to homstead or to open gambling halls, they all had long, weary miles of travel ahead over roads such as most of them had never seen before. They were all grand folks and eager to be off to adventure.

Lest Mrs. Dickinson's diary be discouraging, I might mention that the Dickinson's had a party of six and a very heavy outfit, and they were loaded with all the things that six individuals cherished and hated to leave behind.

So if you want to go where life is still a bit raw, lonely, and wild, take a trip now before too many find the way there and spoil it for those who love adventure.
