BIOGRAPHY OF UNITED STATES COL.ROSCOE RICHARD HALLER

U.S.Air Force Col. Roscoe Richard Haller

Roscoe Richard Haller was born Feb. 3,1919, a son of Frank and Lottie Brady Haller, he graduated from LaFargeville High School and attened St. Lawrence University, Canton,New York.

He married Corrine Senter, and the couple lived for a time in Potsdam.,New York where Mrs. Haller was employed as a teacher. The marriage later ended in divorce.

Col. Haller joined the Army Air Corps in January 1943 and flew 67 combat missions in B-26 Marauder bombers during his 58 months in the european Theater of Operations. During that time he flew over most of the major battlefields of the western Front. In Feb. 1944, he was forced to make an emergency jump from his plane. His unpacked parachute ripped as he jumped out of the bomb bay doors. With only half a parachute,he fell quickly to the ground,but was only slightly injured.

On D-Day, June 6,1944, he commanded the lead aircraft from England to Brittany making way for the allied invasion. For his wartime services he was arwarded the distinguished Flying Cross,The Air Medal,two Silver and one Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster and The Purple Heart.

Following the war, he was assigned to the Occupation Air Force in 1946. He served in Germany,where he was a deputy base commander at one of the airlift bases and flew supplies into Russian-blocked Berlin. He also served as an Air Force Official at the Nuremberg Trials. In 1957, Col. Haller was assigned to Korea for a year to work with the United Nations truce commission.

On Jan, 20,1961, he served as Commander of Troops for President John F. Kennedy's inaugural parade. During his assignment at Andews Air Force Base,Md., Col. Haller was often called upon to escort President Kennedy.

He was a member of American Legion Post 1778 in LaFargeville.

His mother Lottie was married to Frank Haller and was the daughter of Richard and Lucy (nee:Carpenter) Brady. Lucy was the daughter of Mary Ellen (nee:Ross) and John Carpenter, Mary Ellen was the daughter of Willam and Clarissa (Nee:Whiting) Ross.
