My sister Nancy Margaret (nee:Dickinson)Chamberlain wrote this poem as a young teenager some where in the early 1960's. She has written many since even publishing them but this has always been my favorite one. Look for more of her poems on this site under My Mother Grace.
A LITTLE CLOSET PRAYER
By: Nancy Dickinson
Every so often you chance to hear
A phrase or quotation that pleases your ear
Like the one from the "GOOD BOOK " I encountered one day,
Where it reads "Go into your closet to pray"
For there in the darkness you're quite sure to find
Silence and closeness and your own peace of mind.
I liked the idea,so I proceded to do
Exactly what the quote wanted me to
So I opened the door and leaped in quite quick
Caught my head in a hanger, in my eye a stick
A crunch underfoot meant my schell lamp was there
When suddenly something hit me mid air,
I reached up (for balance) with such poise and grace
That my freshly ironed skirts fell down in my face
Some heavy big boxes tumbled down from above
I clutched for the knob and gave it a shove
And scrambled forth the best that I might
(Thank Heavens for air and "Let there be light")
The people below me inquired about the clatter
And hollered up stairs and asked "Whats the matter?"
I replied I was cleaning -- For what could I say???
That I'd merely gone into my closet to PRAY.?
