EMMA VERA ALEXANDER was born on 26 June 1874 in Mississippi. She was married to married Samuel T. Underwood in Jasper County, Mississippi on 28 November 1894. Emma died on 07 July 1907 near Mize, Smith County, Mississippi.
I believe that Emma's parents were Flourney (or Flernoy) "Flyn" G. Alexander and Harriett Caroline Baggett. Flourney Alexander was the son of Marcus Sherman Alexander and Martha "Patsy" Gilmer. Marcus S. Alexander moved from Mecklenburg County, North Carolina to Jasper County, Mississippi in the 1840's.
The 1880 Jasper County census lists the family of Christopher Columbus Alexander and Amy Campbell Alexander with a daughter named Emma born about 1874. This Emma married T. F. Gonia of Hinds County, MS. Her tombstone lists her date of birth as 10 Feb 1872. She died on 07 Aug 1959 and is buried in Lebanon Presbyterian Church cemetery in Hinds County, MS.
Flernoy G. Alexander is enumerated on
the 1880 Jasper County census - ED 108, Sheet #36, Residence 296. He is the head
of the household; place of birth - North Carolina. Members of household
are: Harriet C, age 42, wife, Born Florida, Father and
Mother born in Florida; daughters Patsey E, age 17, born in MS; Sarah J., age
13, born in MS; Sons Baron D, age 11, Born in MS, and John G. age 9, born in MS.
Children Emma Alexander, age 6, and Thomas F. Alexander age 3 are
enumerated in the household of JOHN BRYANT (ED 108, sheets 34 & 35.)
According to Ezra "Mac" Alexander, Louisa Bryant, wife of John Bryant was an
Alexander. While Emma and Thomas F. are listed as the daughter and son of the
Bryant family, the place of birth of their mother (Florida)
indicates they are probably the children of F. G. and Harriett C. Alexander. As
further evidence, the 1900 Jasper County census shows Thomas F. Alexander in the
household of Caroline Alexander, now widowed, and is listed as her
son. I obtained a copy of Thomas Franklin Alexander's social security
record which names his parents as F. G. "Flyn" Alexander and Caroline
Baggett.
