FAMILY RELATIONSHIP CHART

How to use a "Relationship Chart"!

To find the relationship between two individuals with a common ancestor, follow these instructions. Assuming Individual "A" is the Fourth Grand Child of the common Ancestor, place him in the Fourth Grand child portion along the top of the chart. To make things simple, assuming that individual "B" is also a Fourth Grand Child of that common Ancestor, place "B" in the Fourth Grand child portion along the left hand side of the chart. Follow both lines to their intersection, and you will find that they are Fourth Cousins to each other. You may print this chart off for your own use, if you wish.

The "Relationship Rule" is:  Count the number of grand parents to the common ancestor for both individuals.  The number for the individual with the LEAST number of grand parents is the number of the cousin.  The DIFFERENCE between the numbers of grand parents for the two individuals is the number of times removed of the cousin.  If you are using a descendancy chart with generations numbered such that the common ancestor is 1, then the number of grand parents to the common ancestor is the number associated with your grand parent.
