This Longman family tree originated with one John Longman, Sr., born about 1470 in Marnhull, Dorset, U.K. John Longman's 10th-generation grandson, Alfred Longman, (1848-1893) left the UK on Christmas day, 1881 to find a new home for his family in the United States. Alfred's wife, Phebe, and their five children left England in September 1884 to join Alfred in Stutsman County, Dakota Territory. After the catastrophically cold winter of 1888, the family moved to southern Louisiana in 1889. Jefferson Davis and St. Mary Parish been the traditional home of the Longman family since the early 1900's, although many memers of the family have now dispersed throughout the United States.
