John Riley UMPHRESS * Martha Susan JOHNSTON

John Riley Umphress was born on 17 November 1837 in Newton County, Georgia. He married Martha Susan Johnston on 14 Sep 1871 in Tallapoosa County. Martha, born 2 January 1849, was the daughter of John Y. Johnston and Rutha Meadows. A cousin of Martha's, Josephine Johnston, married a brother of John Riley, Joseph. John Riley was a member of Company B, 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment. John Riley died on 11 July 1908 and Martha died on 2 November 1947. They are buried in the Old Center Port (Centerpoint) Cemetery, Tallapoosa Co., close to Martha's mother Rutha Meadows Johnston. Nothing more is known of this family.
