James Pierce
JOHNSTON
James Pierce Johnston was born on 18 April 1847 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, the first child of John Johnston and Mary Ann Celebia Hainey. He married Josephine P. Tomme on 25 November 1869 in Tallapoosa County. She born in September 1846, was the daughter of Steven Marshall Tomme and Kate Sanders.
James Pierce enlisted in Company A, 63rd Alabama Infantry in 1864. This unit was made up almost entirely of 16 and 17 year olds. Their major engagement was the Seige of Blakely across the river from Mobile, Alabama in April 1865. James was captured there on April 9, and later exchanged. He was paroled at Meridian, Mississippi on 13 May 1865.
James died on 12 January 1916 and Josephine died in 1925. They are buried in the Dadeville Cemetery, in Dadeville, Alabama.
