Mary Thomas JOHNSTON

 

Johnathan Gray was born  on 05 June 1833 in Meriwether County, Georgia. He married in Tallapoosa County, Alabama on 21 December 1854 to Mary Thomas Johnston. Mary was born in 1841, the dauther of Joseph Johnston and Elizabeth Smith. Johnathan and Mary had one child before Mary died. She died sometime before 1870. Johnathan moved to Texas, probably alongside his brother, Columbus around 1885.

Sometime around 1881, Johnathan married Martha Hurd Stout. The time and place of this union is not known. They are listed in the 1900 Coleman County census as having been married 19 years. Martha had one daughter by a previous marriage: Sarah. Sarah married Johnathan's nephew, William Melvin Gray. William Melvin was the son of Columbus.

John served in the Civil War as a 1st Lieutenant with Company B, 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment, alongside his brother Columbus.

John Gray died on 08 September 1900 and was buried in the Midway Cemetery in northwestern Coleman County. Martha Gray, then married Joseph N. Taylor in Runnels County, Texas in 1908. When she died, she was buried beside John, her second husband.
