Thomas Jack Clayton was born 9 January 1844 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. He married Thomas Shackelford Mulligan (nee Canada) on 13 October 1866 in Tallapoosa County. Shackelford was the daughter of Edward J. and Snowy McBurnett Canada and was born in September 1840. She married first to Johnathan M. Mulligan, who died during the Civil War in 1863. Shackelford died in April 1919 and is buried in Red Ridge Cemetery, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. It is not known at this time what became of Thomas.
Thomas served with Company K, 38th Tennessee Regiment during the Civil War. He was captured at Nashville, Tennessee on 15 December 1864 and parolled on 10 June 1865 at Point Lookout, Maryland.
