About the Project

The period 1813 to 1880 was chosen for two main reasons:-

1) The records are generally written in a modern hand and in a tabular format
2) Although civil registration was introduced in 1837 it did not become compulsory until 1875 and many, many Family Historians become stuck with ancestors born after civil registration commenced but who's birth was not registered.

Tinstaafl ("There Is No Such Thing As A Free Lunch") Transcripts is a pseudonym as the author presently prefers to remain anonymous. The choice of the name reflects the philosophy that in this life you seldom get something for nothing. The author is prepared to put in effort to progress this project in the hope that others will benefit. In return there is the hope that similar projects may be inspired in other areas and periods. The author dreams of the day when all this data is in electronic format and freely available to all.

The author recognises the project is enormous and will probably never be complete - but like water dripping on a stone time will wear away the task.

Early indications are that there is a correlation between the number of individuals in the census of 1831 and the approximate number of baptisms, the ratio hovering around a figure of 2 baptisms per citizen extant in 1831. Using this measure the current progress can be measured against the population of the parishes transcribed:-

The author will tackle this task each event at a time in a random fashion, data-sets have been sequence selected by random number so if you are looking for patterns there should be none - and if the parish you are interested in hasn't been done, check periodically it may appear.

Data will be uploaded usually on a weekly basis provided a period of 10 years is complete (5 years in larger parishes). Absences due to holidays and business may account for gaps in uploads.

All correspondence should be through Tinstaffl Transcripts
