Melton Constable St Peter

Baptisms 1813 to 1880

Melton Constable parish is dominated by the eponymous Hall, home of the Astleys. Prior to the coming of the railway this was a parish whose residents lived and worked in the estate. The occupations show a bucolic picture of Victorian rural high society, a society dominated by the hunt and country pursuits.

St Peter's Church, too, lies in the grounds of the Hall, it is largely Norman in age but was extensively restored in 1885, Set in the parkland of the estate it has a rural charm of its own

That Melton Constable was a small parish is demonstrated by this transcript and its relatively few entries. The transcript was prepared from microfilm MF1622 in the Norfolk Record Office collection, the entries were exceedingly clear and the handwriting not too difficult.
