New Buckenham parish lies in south Norfolk - south-west of Norwich and midway between Attleborough & Diss. The term "New" is relative as the village was a planned Norman settlement largely built in the mid-twelth century to serve the castle. In common with this urban planning the village streets form a regular grid-pattern, an unusual feature for Norfolk.

St Martin's church is a rather magnificent example of the Perpendicular style and a massive edifice dominating the village centre but set back in a "close" behind the houses. The church probably dates largely from the late 15th century but with extensive renovation and restoration in Victorian times. A splendid feature of the churches are the bank of 10 windows on both sides of the clerestory which bathe the inside with light.

The register to 1851 which forms the bulk of this transcript is a relatively recent deposit and is filmed on Microfilm MF1692 of the collection of the Norfolk Record Office. This is an excellent exampleof more recent filming standards and a clear and contrasting image was maintained throughout.

The transcript has been modified from the original Bishop's Transcript entries following the deposit of the second register and its filming on Microfilm MF/RO708. This film is also clear and contrasty with excellent images. Where corrections were required to existing entries these have also been corrected from this register - as well as the missing years being added.
