Walter Tinlin.  A weaver in Hawick in Oct 1715, probably son of John and Agnes (Broun) Tinlin [reg.].  He married Anne Tinlin on 8 Dec 1723 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire and on 27 Dec 1723 in Hawick, Roxburghshire [reg., SCR].  She was the daughter of John Tinline of Kirklands, Ancrum (see her entry) [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Hawick and she was living in Ancrum [reg.].  Living in Hawick in Mar 1725, Apr 1727, Jul 1729, Jun 1737, Oct 1744 [SCR].  He was bur. 18 Oct 1761 in Hawick [reg.].  Children: Christian, John, Ann, Robert, Agnes.

 

Walter Tinline.  Married Mary Elder before c. 1778 [daughter’s death cert.].  He was a journeyman shoemaker [daughter’s death cert.].  Children: Mary.

 

Walter Tinlin.  Chr. 25 Oct 1766 in Hawick, Roxburghshire, son of Robert and Margaret (Turnbull) Tinlin [SCR].  Probably died young as a younger sibling was given the same name.

 

Walter Tinline.  Born c. 1767 [Tombstone Inscriptions in Berwickshire].  Married Jane Oliver [ibid].  She was born c. 1782 [calc.].  He was a fisherman in Dryburgh, Mertoun Parish, Berwickshire [ibid.].  She died 7 Jul 1835, age 53 [ibid.].  He died on 13 Feb 1838, age 61, and was bur. at Dryburgh Abbey [ibid.].  [Probably the son of Robert and Margaret (Turnbull) Tinline].

Tailor” [cen.].  In 1851 he was living in Bowden, was unmarried, and was a tailor [cen.].  He died unmarried on 5 Feb 1856 in Bowden of a fever/chest affection, age 34, and was bur. in Bowden Churchyard [cert.].

 

Walter Tinlin.  Born 20 Oct 1824 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire, son of John and Janet (Hume) Tinlin [JT, cen.].  In 1841 he was living on the east side of Roxburgh Street, Kelso, Roxburghshire, and was working as a manual servant [cen.].  He married Agnes Douglas on 25 Oct 1850 in Kelso, Roxburghshire and on 2 Nov 1850 in Oxnam, Roxburghshire [JT].  She was born 9 Apr 1833 in Oxnam, daughter of William and Cecilia (Smith) Douglas [cen., her death cert.].  In 1851 they were living with her parents in Twinside Hall, Oxnam, and he was working as an agricultural laborer [cen.].  They were living in Oxnam in May 1853 [SCR].  In 1861 they were living in Pennymuir, Oxnam, and he was working as the landlord of a public house [cen.].  In 1871 they were living in Pennymuir, Oxnam, and he was working as an innkeeper [cen.].  She died 11 Sep 1877 at Pennymuir, Oxnam [cert.].  In 1881 he was living in Oxnam, was working as an innkeeper, and was a widower [cen.].  In 1891 he was living in Oxnam Kirk, Roxburghshire, a retired innkeeper, and a widower [cen.].  In 1901 he was living in Edgerston, Roxburghshire, a retired innkeeper and farmer, and a widower [cen. says born Kelso].  He died on 12 Dec 1912 at Fulton, near Jedburgh, Roxburghshire [JT, SCVL].  Children: Cecilia P., Janet Hume, Mary Douglas, Agnes Jane, John, Alice Douglas.

Walter Tinlin-Drummond.  Arrived in New York City at age 37 [NYP 1902-43].  Possibly a descendant of Cecilia P. Tinlin and Michael Drummond, or of Robert and Isabella (Oliver Tinline) Drummond.

 

Walter Douglas Tinlin.  Born 12 Dec 1885 in Pennymuir, Oxnam Parish, Roxburghshire, son of John and Margaret (Wilson) Tinlin [cert. (says George Douglas)].  Probably the Walter Tinline who arrived in New York City at age 16 (?) [NYP 1902-43].  He immigrated to the U.S. in 1905 [cen.].  He married Agnes R. Stearns on 17 Sep 1922 at Portland, Oregon [JT, Anc.].  She was born 3 Jun 1895 in Waldport, Oregon [JT, SS, Internet].  In 1930 they were living in Wind Mountain, Skamania Co., Washington and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  They lived at one time in California [SS].  He died 9 May 1937 [JT].  She died 14 Aug 1978 in Yakima, Yakima Co., Washington [JT, Anc.].  Benefits sent to Danville, Ferry Co., Washington [SS].  They were bur. in Berge Cemetery, Home Valley, Skamania Co., Washington [Internet].  Children: Margaret Elizabeth, Walter Douglas.

Watt Tinlinn, Sir.  A character in Sir Walter Scott’s “The Lay of the Last Minstrel”, according to Scott he was a real person who was a retainer of the Buccleuch family, and held for his Border service a small tower on the frontiers of Liddesdale, apparently in the 16th century.

Widdrington Tinling.  Born 27 Jul 1819, and chr. 28 Sep 1819 in Christ Church, Barbados, son of Isaac John and Elizabeth Bynoe (Evelyn) Tinling [reg.].  He married Clarentine Augusta King Evelyn on 5 Dec 1843 in Christ Church [reg.].  She was the daughter of John and Margaret (Cole) Evelyn [corr.].  They were living in Christ Church in Dec 1844, Oct 1847, Jul 1853 and in St. Michael, Barbados in Oct 1846, Mar 1859 [IGI].  He was a Deputy Assistant in the Commissariat Department of the British Army from 26 Dec 1846 on St. Vincent [Internet].  He died in 1890 [NH].  Children: Margaret, Eurydice, Clarentine Augusta, Frederick Charles, Widdrington, Alfred, Clarentine Augusta K., Emeline.

William Tinling.  Born before 1658 [calc.].  In 1728 he was in jail in Cumberland (apparently in Carlisle) for debt, was over age 70, and had been there for five months, at which time he was awarded poor relief [A2A].

William Tinling.  Living in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland in 1691 [reg.].  He is apparently the William Tinling, Senior of Broomhouses, Bellister Lordship, Haltwhistle who was bur. on 21 Apr 1721 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.]. Children: Mary, probably Thomas.

 

William Tinling.  Chr. 29 May 1681 in Kirklinton Parish, Cumberland, son of David [and Jane] Tinling [IGI].  [The parish register only had “Will Son of David Tinling”, rest of page missing, apparently in the year 1684.  This may be a second son with the same name.]  He was bur. 9 May 1757 in Kirklinton Parish [reg.].  At the time, he was living in Hethersgill and was noted as being poor [reg.].  Children (possibly): Mary.

William Tinling.  Chr. 22 Jan 1708 in Burgh by Sands, Cumberland, son of Isaac and Anne (Loansdale) Tinling [reg., BT].  Probably the William Tinling who married Anne Hodgson on 19 Jun 1735 in Kirkbampton Parish, Cumberland [IGI].  Living in Dike(s)field, Burgh by Sands, Cumberland in Jun 1739, Oct 1741, Apr 1744, and in West End, Burgh by Sands in Mar 1747 [BT].  He was bur. 3 May 1747 in Burgh by Sands, when his residence had been West End [BT].  Children: Mary, John, Jane, Sarah.

 

William Tinling.  At the time of his marriage he had been living in Rickerby, Stanwix, Cumberland, and was a yeoman [mar. lic.].  He married Elizabeth New Trowel in 1726 (late November?) in Suffolk [Suffolk Archdeaconry marriage licenses].  At the time of their marriage, she was living in Little Bealings, Suffolk [mar. lic.].  They were living in Little Bealings, Suffolk in Aug 1730 and Woodbridge, Suffolk in Nov 1731, and in Holborn, London in Aug 1738 [IGI].  There was a Court of Chancery pleading, Trowell v. Tinling, sometime between 1714 and 1758 [PRO].  He is apparently the William Tinling who was working for the Crown Office in 1745 and appeared in a trial at the Old Bailey [OB].  She was a widow in Mar 1768, living in St. Andrew, Holborn, London [her will].  Her will was proved 14 Oct 1773 [will].  Children: Samuel, Betty New, Samuel (2nd), Mary.

 

William Tinling.  Chr. 4 Apr 1722 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland, son of Thomas and Ann Tinling of Broomhouses, Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was living at Broomhouses in 1766 when he was a churchwarden for Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was living at Broomhouses in 1777 [reg.].  He rented a farm and a mill stone quarry at Broomhouses for over 20 years, and was bailiff for Bellister Manor [MP, probate of will].  He left a will dated 29 Aug 1792, at which time he was a yeoman at Broomhouses [MP].  He is the William Tinling, Senior of Park, Haltwhistle who was bur. on 20 Jan 1795 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg., probate of will].

 

William Tindling.  Chr. 30 Jan 1724 in Norham Parish, Northumberland, son of Patrick [reg. says Peter?] [and Elisabeth (Scott)] Tindling [reg.].  He was bur. on 7 Dec 1724 in Norham Parish [reg.].

William Tinline.  Chr. 30 Jun 1745 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, son of George and Isabella (White) Tinline [reg.].  Possibly the William Tinin (sic) who married Janet Robson on 1 Dec 1771 in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire [SCR].  He is apparently the William Tinlin, labourer of Ancrum, for whom there are inventories on file at the Peebles Commissary Court dated 3 Jul 1818 and 23 May 1818 [Internet].

 

William Tinling.  Born in 1749, probably in Minorca, son of Isaac John and Johanne (Stubbs) Tinling [Hodgson, O’Byrne, NH].  Entered the Army in the 29th Worcestershire Regiment on 7 Oct 1782 [AL - listed as William Tingling].  He drew a map of the area of operations of a Canadian campaign c. 1780, now at the U.S. Library of Congress.  Became a Lieutenant 10 Nov 1784 [AL].  He was second in command to John Ross at Cataraqui (now Kingston, Ontario, Canada) c. 1783-4, and in 1785 he made accusations leading to Ross’ arrest, but Ross was exonerated [Dic. of Canadian Biography, Vol. IV, pg. 684].  He was in charge of the engineers at Cataraqui, which was then in Western Quebec [Dic. of C. B., Vol. VI, pg. 146].   He married Frances Peirson on 28 Jan 1790 in Boxgrove, Sussex [reg.].  She was chr. in 1755 in Pontefract, Yorkshire, daughter of Sir Richard Peirson of Lowthorpe, Yorkshire [DNB, GW].  At the time of their marriage, William was living in Chichester, and Frances in Boxgrove [reg.].  He was a witness at the marriage of his sister Johanna at East Teignmouth, Devon in Jan 1793 [reg.].  They lived in Chichester, Sussex in Oct 1794 [reg.].  Joined the 42nd Royal Highland Regiment on 14 Sep 1795 [AL].  In 1797 he was Deputy Inspector-General of Foreign Corps in Yarmouth, Norfolk [GW].  Was a paymaster from 5 Dec 1799 in the 17th Regiment [AL].  Was a paymaster on the Irish half pay from 1802 [AL].  Last mentioned in the Army List of 1805.  She was bur. 10 Nov 1831 in the catacombs of All Saint’s, Southampton, Hampshire, age 74 [reg.].  He died 11 (or 4?) 1836 in Southampton, and was bur. 16 Jan 1836 in the catacombs of All Saint’s, Southampton, age 87 [London Times, 13 Jan 1836, page 4, reg.].  At the time of their deaths, they lived at 3 Moira Place, Southampton [reg., GW]. Children: Frances Sarah, Frances Mary, Augusta, Anna Maria.

William Tinling.  Chr. 19 Apr 1765 in Haltwhistle Parish, Northumberland, son of Thomas and Hannah (Coatsworth) Tinling of Park, Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He married Jane Winter on 5 Sep 1795 in Haltwhistle Parish [reg.].  He was a joiner [reg.].  They were living in Haltwhistle Parish in Jan 1796, May 1797, Apr 1799 and in Hexham Parish in Apr 1805 [reg.].  She is probably the Jane Tindling who was bur. on 5 Dec 1824 in Hexham Parish, age 48 [reg.]. Children: Jane, Hannah, Mary, Thomas, Ann, George.

 

William Tinlane.  Chr. 26 Dec 1768 in Roxburgh, Roxburghshire, son of James and Ann (White) Tinlane [SCR].

 

William Tinline.  Chr. 14 May 1775 in Crailing, Roxburghshire, son of John and Christian (Haliday) Tinline [reg.].  He married Elizabeth White in Crailing, Roxburghshire  (consignation money paid 8 Dec 1799) [reg.].  In 1799 he was living in Nisbet, Crayling, and was a tailor [LBR].  They were living in Crailing in May 1801, Mar 1804, and in “Mount hooly”, Crailing in Oct 1808 [reg.].  He died before 1841 [cen.].  In 1841 she was living in West Nisbet Farm, Crailing [cen.].  In 1851 she was living in West Nisbet Farm, Crailing, a widow, "pauper, formerly wife of a tailor" [cen.].  She died before 12 Jan 1867 [son’s death cert.].  Children: Ann, Christian, James.  [One daughter married a man named Scott, another a man named Maxwell.]

 

William Tinlin.  Born 23 Nov 1775 in Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland, son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Rutherford) Tinlin [reg.].  He married Elizabeth Yellowley on 24 Feb 1803 in Bolam, Northumberland [reg.].  At the time of their marriage, he was living in Hartburn Parish, she was living in Bolam Parish [reg.]. They were Presbyterians [reg.].  She was christened 29 Sep 1782 in Hartburn, Northumberland, daughter of Edward and Mary (Nicholson) Yellowley [reg.].  She died 9 Dec 1837 in Kirkwhelpington, age 57, and was bur. 12 Dec 1837 in Kirkwhelpington [cert., reg. says age 60].  He lived in Kirkwhelpington the rest of his life, working as a linen weaver [cen.].  He died 19 Nov 1868 in Kirkwhelpington, age 92, and was bur. 22 Nov 1868 in Kirkwhelpington [cert., reg. says age 93].  Children: William, Robert, Edmund, Thomas, James, Elizabeth, John, Esther.

William Tinline.  Born 22 May 1785 in Maxton, Roxburghshire, son of James and Elizabeth (Hunter) Tinline [reg.].  He married Margaret MacPherson on 6 Jun 1823 in Latheron, Caithness [reg].  At the time, they were both living in Berriedale, Caithness, and he was working as a shepherd [reg.].  They were living in Langwell, Caithness in Jun 1824, in Latheron Parish, Caithness in Apr 1826 and in Kildonan, Sutherland in May 1828, Jun 1830, Mar 1832 [SCR, IGI, reg.].  They were in Ontario by 1844 [cen.].  They were living in King Twp., Ontario in 1846 [Western Canadians, son’s death cert.].  She died before 1861 [cen.].  He was living in King Twp., York Co., Ontario in 1861, a widower, and a farmer [cen. as Tinlane].  He was living in King, North York Co., Ontario in 1871, a widower working as a farmer [cen.].  He died in 1876 in King, Ontario [cert. – exact date not noted, but around September].  At least one letter of his to relatives in New Zealand still exists [PS].  [She is called Katherine in some records].  Children: James, Janet, George, Elisabeth, Catharine, Margaret, John, Elizabeth.

William Edward Tinling.  Born 8 Feb 1878 in Cumberland, son of a horse trader in Dumfries [Can. Archive (says Dumfries), STG].  His family moved to Dumfries when he was very young [STG].  He married 1st Alice Tanner [Can. Archive, STG].  He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force on 25 Jul 1916 during World War I [Can. Archive].  At the time he was living in Montreal, Quebec, working as a lathe hand, chauffeur, driver, and munition worker [Can. Archive].  He was living in Montreal, Canada in 1923 [MET].  He married 2nd Mary Ellen Tobin [STG].  Both of his wives had been previously married, so these might not be their maiden names [STG].  He was buried in Cotes des Neiges Cemetery, Montreal [STG].  Children by 1st wife: Eric, William.  Children by 2nd wife: Barbara, Donald E., Shirley.  [Surely the same as the William Edward Tinling born in Bridekirk, Cumberland?].

Hedges Cemetery, Broughton [obit.].  Children: Kay.

Tinling.  Born 10 ___ 1917 (3rd quarter) in Gateshead District (Durham), son of James and Eveline (Newton) Tinling [CR].  He married Elsie Doreen Harper in 3rd quarter 1939 in Knaresborough District (North Yorkshire) [CR].  She was born 20 ___ 1920 [CR].  He died in or shortly before Feb 1999 in North Yorkshire District [CR].  She died in or shortly before Dec 2000 in North Yorkshire District [CR].  Children: Jacqueline F.E.A., Ian W., James Stuart.

 

William Rochfort Tinling.  Chr. 14 Jun 1786 at Holy Trinity, Gosport, Hampshire, age 2 months, son of Jonathan (John) and Elizabeth (Robinson) Tinling [reg.].   He was bur. 16 Apr 1787 at Alverstoke, Hampshire [FHO].

 

William Ronald Tinlin.  Born 4th quarter 1913 in Brentford District (Middlesex), son of ______ and ______ (Barker) Tinlin [CR].  He married Elaine Joy McMurtrie in 2nd quarter 1945 in Northumberland South District [CR].  She was born 21 Jan 1918 in Hexham, Northumberland, daughter of Radburn Angus and Ethel Maud (Wilkins) McMurtrie [Internet].  She died c. 1980 [Internet].  Children: Ian R., Peter A. M.

Tinlin.  Born Apr 1842 in Ancrum, Roxburghshire, son of James and Jenette (Scott) Tinlin [WRT, cen.].  In 1851 he was living with his parents in Weaselton, Jedburgh [cen.].  In 1861 he was living with his parents in Riddlelowhill, Maxton, Roxburghshire, working as a railway labourer [cen.].  Came to the U.S. in 1863 [WRT].  He was living with his parents in Fox Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio in 1870, was single, and working as a farmer [cen.].  He married Sarah A.Wilson on 20 Nov 1877 [reg.].  At the time, his residence was Harlem Springs [reg.].  She was born in May 1852 in Ohio [cen.].  They were living in Lee Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio in Jun 1880, when he was working as a farmer [cen.].  In 1900 they were living in Lee Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio, and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  In 1910 they were living in Lee Twp., Carroll Co., and he was working as a farmer [cen.].  He died 11 May 1915 in Carroll Co., Ohio [WRT, Internet].  She was living in Lee Twp., Carroll Co., Ohio in Jan 1920 [cen.].  She was living with her son John in 1930 in Lee Twp., Carroll Co. [cen.].  She died 18 Sep 1931 in Carroll Co., Ohio [WRT, Internet].  Children: Margaret M., Ann Lula, John Easton, Maude B.

 

William Scott Tinline.  Born 2 May 1860, and chr. 16 Aug 1860 in Saint Peter’s, Liverpool, Lancashire, son of George and Sarah Ann (Grindstone) Tinline [IGI].  In 1871 he was living with his parents in Liverpool [cen.].  [A William Tenland, born c. 1858 in Liverpool was living in Liverpool in 1881 (cen.), but with a younger brother Thomas].

 

William Stephen Tinlin (e).  Born c. 1826 in Ontario, son of James and Margaret (Coon) Tinlin [cen., chr. record].  He was of Scottish origin [cen.].  Chr. 1 May 1827 in Thorold, Louth, Lincoln Co., Ontario [chr. record, RLC].  In 1851 he was living in Louth with his parents, was working as a carpenter, and was unmarried [cen.].  He married Rhoda ______ [cen.].  She was born in 1831 in Ontario and was of German descent [cen.].    He is probably the Tinline who was co-owner of Boam & Tinline, carpenters in Beamsville, Lincoln Co., Ontario, Canada in 1857 [Directory of Ontario].  In 1871 they were living in Clinton, Lincoln Co., Ontario, and he was working as a carpenter and farmer [cen.].   In 1881 they were living in Beamsville, Lincoln Co., Ontario [cen.].  He died 26 Oct 1899 in Beamsville [ODR].  In 1901 she was living in Beamsville and was a widow [cen.].  She died 6 Mar 1902 in Beamsville [ODR].  They were bur. in Mt. Osborne Municipal Cemetery, Beamsville [OCFA].  Children: George Walter, Emma E.

 

William Thomas Tinling.  Chr. 23 Dec 1827 in St. John’s, Wakefield Parish, Yorkshire, son of Hector and Elizabeth (Rayner) Tinling [IGI].  He died 4th quarter 1841 in Chorlton District (Lancashire) [CR].

Williamina Tinlin.  Born c. 1824-1826 in Roxburghshire, daughter of William and Margaret (McDonald) Tinlin [cen., death cert.].  In 1841 she was living in Bewliehill, Lilliesleaf, Roxburghshire, working as a family servant [cen. as Mina].  She married John Macaulay in Dec 1849 in Melrose, Roxburghshire [SCR as Mina, her death cert. as McAuley].  He was a journeyman joiner [her death cert.].  She died 26 Mar 1882 at Paterson’s land, Main Street, Bellshill, Lanark, age 58 [cert.].  He survived her [her death cert.].

 

Willis Dudley Tinling.  Born 18 May 1896 in Spokane, Spokane Co., Washington, son of Grant Colfax and Eva Elizabeth (Williams) Tinling [SS, JH, MT].   In 1910 he was living with his parents in Seattle, King Co., Washington [cen.].  In 1920 he was living with his parents in Seattle, King Co., Washington, was single, and was working as a night clerk [cen.].  He married 1st Melba ______ in c. 1922 [cen.].  She was born c. 1904 in California [cen.].  He was living in Los Angeles, California in 1926, working as a store manager and in 1930 as a motion picture director [dir.].  They apparently had no children and divorced before Apr 1930 [cen.].  In 1930 he was living in Los Angeles and was working as an exporter [cen.].  In 1930 she was living with her [ex-] brother-in-law James Tinling in Los Angeles and was working as a saleswoman in a clothing store [cen.].  He married 2nd Marian Rose Goble in 1930 in California [BRC, Senior Spectrum, 14 Dec 2004].  She was born 17 Dec 1904, daughter of Frank Newton and Nora (Sale) Goble of New York, and was the author of several books on William Byrd, etc. [UofA catalog].  They divorced in 1948 [BRC].  In Oct 1962 he was living in Portland, Oregon [LA Times, 25 Oct 1962, pg. H12].  He died 26 Dec 1971 in Tacoma, Pierce Co., Washington, benefits sent to Martinez, California [Anc., SS].  He was bur. in Williamette National Cemetery, Multanomah Co., Oregon [Internet].  She lived at one time in Sacramento, California [AB].  Children by Marian Rose Goble: Jaime Rose, Nora, Nicholas Graeme.

Winifred Violet Tinling.  Born 2 Jan 1916, daughter of Cyril Henry Brace Tinling [NH].  She married William Mayo [NH].  He was born 14 May 1914, son of Benjamin and Flora Ann (Lyons) Mayo [RW].  She died 31 Dec 1994 [RW].  He died c. Jan 2001 [RW].
