The following extract was taken from Whaley's History of Mount Pleasant, by the great granddaughter of Ashbel Stearns who was the mother of the present compiler of these records; she thought it would be of interest as a reminder of the past: "Joseph Stearns, Ashbel's father, had a family of eight children. On one occasion he was so reduced for food that he went to Great Bend (some 40 odd miles) and purchased two bushel of wheat, had it ground and brought it home on his back.

"At another time he was destitute of meat which was greatly needed to endure the hard work required to lay the forest. Weakened by toil he was much cast down by his lot here in the wilderness. His wife (formerly Miss Rhoda Tingley) was a devoted pious woman and endeavored to encourage him by referring to that overruling providence which had directed them here and would still protect. Her confidence increasing as she dwelt upon this subject, she arose and said to her husband, now I will hang the pot over the fire and I believe the Lord will fill it. Her confidence was not mistaken for before the water boiled a fawn, apparently frightened, entered the field where her boys were at work. They chased it a few rods and easily captured it in a thicket of bushes, where Mr. Asa Smith's tannery now stands. As they joyfully entered the cabin door the father remembered the words of encouragement and faith so recently spoken and resolved no more to distrust God.

"On another occasion this good woman when her husband and older sons had gone to work, went out to the woods where they had been making sugar, to gather some sap that was wasting. Having no one to leave her infant son with, she took him with her. She made a cradle of a sap trough and laid him down by the side of a large log. While busy here and there gathering sap she looked toward the child and saw an enormous bear upon the log looking down into the innocent face and in the vary act of grabbing him in his extended jaws. The old dog flew to his rescue. That child is now Mr. Ashbel Stearns who lives in this vicinity. Not long after this she had been over to Mr. Stanton's place on a visit with the same infant with her, also her son Otis, then a young lad who was carrying the infant as they were crossing a rivulet in the rear of the present residence of Mr. Jonathan Miller, a large bear came out of the bush and stood directly in front of them in the foot path, but that faithful dog, Carlo, rushed upon the bear who speedily retreated. The red man still lurked in ambush and the bear, panther and wolf roamed unmolested when Mr. Whaley related the above. In 1831, Mr. Ashbel Stearns removed from Mount Pleasant to Clinton where he has lived for the past 51 years. In Aug. 1879 he had a shock or stroke of paralysis; from that time on until his death he has been confined the most of the time to his home. Notwithstanding his confinement and helplessness, he was cheerful and patient to the last and it was a pleasure to go and spend an hour in his company hearing him tell of the changes that have taken place in this section during his life, the companion of his youth still lives. The funeral was largely attended at the Aldenville Baptist Church conducting the services. In the discourse, the Rev. James Remson said `we find from the records that Ashbel was a direct descendant, the sixth generation, of Isaac Stearns who came to New England in 1630 along with Governor Winthrop and Sir Richard Saltonstall and founded the city of Boston, afterwards settling in Watertown, Mass.' _______ The 5th of March 1792 Joseph Stearns, father of Ashbel arrived in Mount Pleasant Township from Connecticut. With his sons, James and Otis, in the early fall he returned to Connecticut and brought his wife and the six other children and commenced the endurance and hardship of pioneer life. At this early period Wayne Co. was a wilderness with the exception of a settlement Milanville on the Delaware. Mr. Asbel Stearns died Monday morning March 13, 1882, living to see Wayne County develop from a forest to its present condition, growth of the Union from thirteen colonies to the greatest nation in the world, during the administration of our 21 presidents but now that mighty tree which has stood so long as a sentinel of the past is fallen to moulder away to its original elements and brother Stearns' book is written, the record is sealed, the land mark is removed and a mound marks its resting place in the little churchyard at Aldenville. The most of the family is gone, only two sons Seymour and Warren remain. His wife survives him; for over sixty years they trod the path of life together, up, up the rugged hill not always strewn with roses, halting on the summit, down, down its shady side to the stream that divides the known from the unknown, he has passed over, she has launched her boat, we can almost hear the dip of the golden oars and she too will soon be on th eother shore."

"Charles settled each of his five sons on a farm, but the farms were at least five miles apart `so the sons would remain good friends', or so it is said. Charles bought the first piano ever to come into Susquehanna County for his daughter - and it was mahogany. Probably because of the weight of the piano, it has remained in the same house ever since - presently in the home of Lee Summers, in Gibson, it is supposed.

"Charles' daughter was the one and only, and attended a girls' finishing school in Montrose. She came home on vacation, and the next morning she did not come down to breakfast, and Charles went up to call her and found her dead in bed - only 21 years old."220
