06-00042-01 MARY (POLLY) TINGLEY-POLLOCK7 (John6, Joseph5, Ebenezer4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Palmer1), of Symmes Twp., Hamilton Co., and Miami Twp., Clermont Co., OH when Ezekiel applied for pension, born Jan. 7, 1796 probably in Somerset Co., NJ; died July 3, 1875, 79y 6m 2d, at Cincinnati, OH, buried in Mt. Holly Congregational Church Cem. at Milford, OH; married Mar. 23, 1813 at _______, Ezekiel, son of James and _______ (_______) Pollock, of Carlisle, PA, born May 24, 1790 at Carlisle, PA; died June 22, 1879, 89y 28d, at Cincinnati, OH, buried in Greenlawn Cem. at Milford, Clermont Co., OH. Ezekiel was a farmer, served in War of 1812 as teamster until General Hull's surrender. Served from June 1812 until 1813. His claim was rejected because he was considered a civil employee and not a soldier. According to local history, John Cleves Symmes, a citizen of Trenton, NJ, served in the Continental Congress. He contracted with the U.S. Treasury for a million acres of land in the Miami River area along the Ohio River where Cincinnati now stands for 66 cents an acre. He spent the greater part of the next year organizing parties of immigrants to settle on the land. Many came from NJ, PA, MD, and NY. He then persuaded the government to station some troops nearby. The soldiers were paid $3 per month.

From a history Cincinnati and Hamilton Co., OH, by S.B. Nelson Co., pub. in 1894, Pauline Allen Miller (a D.A.R. member) supplied the following:

"Ezekiel Pollock came with his parents in 1795 to Symmes Twp. settling on a tract of 300 acres which his father, James Pollock, had purchased from Judge Symmes. The first grist mill was on the Pollock property.

"On July 4, 1871 the bridge connecting Symmes Station and branch was completed. Ezekiel Pollock then in his 81st year was present at the celebration. At the time of his death 5 of the 7 children born to his union with Mary Tingley were living, -- Mrs. J.W. Baen, Hamilton, Ezekiel, Jr., James and John. The Pollock family was a distinguished one in the pioneer and later history of Hamilton and Clermont counties... Ezekiel Pollock was evidently a church Elder. He performed many marriages in the county. His son-in-law, J.W. Baen also performed marriages."
