A note in the pension file, written by Ben Dixon, stated that Lemuel was his great-great grandfather who for his Rev. War service in Morris Co., NJ received a land grant in western New York and he thought Lemuel had probably died there at Lockport, NY. Ben also thought Nathan (or Nathaniel), father of Lemuel had Rev. War service in NJ and that John Tingley323 drew a pension for service in War of 1812 - "lived many years at New Matamoras, (Eastern Ohio) and died there." Lemuel enlisted at Mendham, NJ in May 1778, joined the army June 5, 1778, served as Private in Capt. Jeremiah Ballard's Co., Col. Dayton's Regt. About 1797 they moved from Morris Co., NJ and subsequently in 1800 to what was called the Red Stone country in Fayette Co., McClellandtown, PA, where he married second and where he spent the remainder of his life and where many of his descendants still reside. He engaged in milling and flat-boating to New Orleans returning via New York. For several years he kept a hotel in Masontown, PA, and carried on a shoe factory, bringing his leather across the mountains from Maryland and Virginia in a wagon. A man of rare talent for business and affairs. He laid the foundation of the fortune which his descendants have ever since enjoyed562. Elias married second, Anna Strubel, and third, widow Mary (Brown) Grove. By his second wife he had a daughter Anne, therefore she was not a Tingley descendant.
The last marriage of Elias was a bit unusual. After retiring from business, he had moved in with his son Elias to spend his remaining years. Mrs. Mary Brown, the mother-in-law of his son Elias had also come to live with her daughter Hannah Matilda Parshall, and the elderly couple were married595.

05-00016-01 RHODA TINGLEY-STEARNS6 (Thomas5, Timothy4, Thomas3, Samuel2, Palmer1), of Pleasant Mount, PA, born Aug. 17, 1755 at Attleboro, MA12; died Dec. 21, 1837 at Mount Pleasant, PA24; married Dec. 1, 1774 at Attleboro, MA12, Joseph, son of Capt. John and Rebecca (Dean) Stearns, of Attleboro, MA (grandson of John Dean of Dedham, MA), born Oct. 7, 1751 at Attleboro, MA12; died June 2, 1829 at Mount Pleasant, PA24; both are buried in Evergreen Cem. at Mount Pleasant, PA. In 1783 Joseph moved his family from Attleboro, MA to Tolland, CT, and in 1793 to Mount Pleasant, Wayne Co., PA. Joseph was a soldier and pensioner of the Revolution. He enlisted five times. His father, Capt. John, looked after his wife and children while he fought in the war. He was plowing in the field, when word came of the Battle of Lexington and Concord. He left the ox team and started for the battle scene, but the battle was over by the time he reached there. He helped sink the British ship Roebuck at Hellgate.325
Shortly after the close of the Revolutionary War the great migration from the New England states into Northeastern Pennsylvania began.
On March 5, 1792, Joseph Stearns and Jirah Mumford arrived in Pleasant Mount. At this time Northern Wayne County and Susquehanna County were unsettled and mostly primitive. Joseph was the first Stearns and Jirah the first Mumford to settle in Northeastern Pennsylvania and thus the two vast families were founded here.
Joseph and Jirah each brought an ox team and an ox sled. Joseph brought his two sons, James and Otis, and a hired man. Jirah brought his twelve year old son and two hired men. They were on their way to the newly formed "Nine Partner Settlement" in Harford, Susquehanna County. There were only three or so families in the Pleasant Mount vicinity at that time. Joseph and Jirah decided to stay at Pleasant Mount for a while. Provisions were short and Joseph walked to the primitive settlement of Harmony (now Lanesboro) and carried back two bushels of grain on his back.
Later in the spring, Joseph and his two sons went on to the Harford settlement. Here they cleared land on the Nine Parner's Tract near a spring west of the present village. In the fall of 1792, Joseph returned to Connecticut for his wife and other children. That same fall he brought his family back to Pleasant Mount.
That summer Jirah Mumford had stayed in Pleasant Mount and rolled up a log cabin. He returned to Connecticut for the winter and that winter Joseph and his family lived in the cabin. This was an extremely hard winter for the few settlers at Pleasant Mount. No land had been cleared in time to plant crops and wild game was the only meat. Many tales can be told of the hardships of these first winters.
In the spring of 1793, Mumford returned to Pleasant Mount and Joseph moved his family into a cabin that had been built by Elijah Dix. That summer Joseph cleared land nearby and built a cabin. This became the farm on which he spent the remainder of his life. This farm was at the northeast edge of Pleasant Mount Village on the old Stockport Road. It was later owned by Neah Crittenden and J.W. Monroe81. See Ref. 325.
Joseph died in 1829 and Rhoda in 1837. They are buried in Evergreen Cem. at Mount Pleasant. The monument on their grave, erected by a grandson, David Wooster Stearns, reads:
