Benjamin was a soldier in the French and Indian War, enlisting in 1758. He served at Fort Cumberland, N.S., from Apr. 1759 to Sep. 1760. He was at the Battle on the Plains of Abraham, but was not engaged. He was First Lieut., in Capt. Caleb Richardson's Co. from Bristol Co., and Adjutant. He was commissioned by the Council of Mass. Bay in New England, July 12, 1776.
He was also a soldier of the Revolution41. As Sgt. in Capt. Jabez Ellis' Co., he served 11 days on alarm Apr. 19, 1775 and Battle of Bunker Hill; 2nd Lieut. in Capt. Jacob Hide's 1st Co. Col. John Daggetts' Regt. (4th Bristol Co.), Mass. Militia; also Lieut. in Capt. Stephen Richardson's Co. served 25 days; also Quarter Master in Col. Isaac Dean's Regt., 10 days service. Engaged July 31, 1780; discharged Aug. 7, 1780; Regt. marched to Tiverton, RI on alarm41.

David Hall House opposite Zwaanendael House, on King's Hwy. was the house of David Hall, Governor of Delaware 1802 to 1805, was shingled and painted gray. It consisted of a tall main section and a lower wing. In 1968 this house was painted white and is one of the best preserved old homes in Lewes.160
"Col. David Hall was admitted to the Bar Aug. 18, 1773, in New Castle Co., Del. He enlisted as a Private and recruited a Company whereupon he was made Captain of the Company Jan. 15, 1776. He subsequently recruited the celebrated Delaware Line Regiment Apr. 5, 1777 and was made its Colonel. They participated at Brandywine, Germantown and Monmouth and were with George Washington at Valley Forge and during the remainder of the war, fought in important battles, doing distinguished service in various lines of duty and they earned a reputation second to no other troops in the Continental Army. Colonel Hall was wounded at Brandywine (Heitman says at the Battle of Germantown), Oct. 4, 1777." (From Officers of the Continental Army F 205).
"At the close of the war he resumed the practice of law in his native town and in 1802 was elected Governor of the State, on the Democratic Ticket. He filled the office with great credit, continuing until 1805. Ex Governor Hall was soon after made one of the Judges of Delaware, under the Constitution of 1792, which position he adorned by his learning, ability, and integrity. When in the Army, he slept in the same tent with Washington and corresponded with him afterward. Picture of Washington, which has ever since hung in the State House at Dover, was presented to the State by the Governor. He died at Lewes, Del., Sep. 18, 1817. His wife was Catherine Tingley of New York. His son Joseph was admitted to the Bar, Oct. 10, 1809, but died soon after in early manhood." (From Scharf's History of Delaware, Vol. I, Folio 210).
"His regiment was known as the Famous Delaware Regiment and was mustered out Nov. 30, 1778. He died in 1817 and is buried in the Presbyterian Graveyard at Lewes, Del." Rev. Thomas Cozad was converted under the preaching of Rev. Abner Sutton. Shortly after his conversion and marriage, which immediately followed, Thomas removed to Sussex Co., NJ, where he was licensed to preach, and became pastor of the 2nd Wantage Baptist Church, known also as the Westtown Church, where he was pastor from 1801 until his death, in 180857. Levi, a Revolutionary soldier68, came to Tate Twp. in 1804 and settled one mile south of Bethel, where, in 1806, he built a tannery and carried on that business until his death. This account was also given in the History of Clermont Co., Ohio, by J.L. Rocky & R.J. Bancroft, pub. 1880, as follows: "In the same neighborhood, Poplar Creek, the same year, 1804, from New Jersey, settled Levi Tingley, also a Revolutionary soldier. In 1806 he commenced a small tanning business, and carried it on until his death, in 1832. His sons were Jacob and Benjamin. The former died at sea. The latter served in the War of 1812, and for many years lived near Bantam, where he carried on a tannery. In 1836 he moved to Indiana. Benjamin and Jonathan Tingley, another son, became property holders and soon after moved to Tate Twp.
