"Joseph Tingley and his family were driven from their home by the Hessians. Christian, his wife, and children with their servants took refuge in Schooley's Mountains. Joseph Tingley took his two oldest boys, Ebenezer and Jeremiah, and equipping themselves with flint-lock muskets, powder horns, home spun blankets, etc., set out for the headquarters of General Washington, not far distant. Approaching General Washington, he took off his hat and put it under his arm. Addressing the General he said, `I believe I have the honor of being in the presence of General Washington'. The General replied, `My name is George Washington. Put on your hat, daddy'. `I came to offer you my service and that of my sons, such as it is, to help in this struggle', said grandfather Tingley. `NOBLE OFFERING. Fall in ranks there and at roll call report your names', directed the General.

"The Hessians had taken possession of their house and barn for headquarters, who, on leaving it, left only the bare walls."

Raymon Tingley's notes clearly state that William married second Jan. 17, 1772 and he has 9 children total shown for William, one more than given in the Jenks genealogy, which also gives his second marriage date as Jan. 17, 1767. In some children's record a birthdate is not shown and for a few of these a marriage date is given. Without further proof or research, it is impossible to be absolutely certain which of these children are of second marriage and which are of first marriage. Assuming William's second marriage date was Jan. 17, 1772 we have the children as shown above. If marriage date of Jan. 17, 1767 is the correct date of his second marriage the children, Job, Luke and Ruth, would belong to second marriage and would not be Tingley descendants.

Between Esther and Ruth there are apparently approximately 4 years assuming no children were born between those two. Likewise, between Job and Luke there are approximately 4 years, again assuming none of these children were born between Job and Luke so it is a toss up at this point and it is assumed Raymon's notes are accurate as it is desired that no Tingley descendant be omitted. Thus Job and Ruth and their descendants are in question at this point and may or may not belong in the Tingley book. Perhaps someone has proof and will kindly inform the compiler of this record. Luke and Diana were born after 1772 so these are definitely not Tingley descendants and are being omitted. Birthdates for Mary and Lucy are unknown at this point and they also may not belong in the Tingley family. That will have to be determined after their dates have been found.
