Ferdinand and Fredericka Reichert apparently immigrated from Germany to the United States prior to 1864, since, according to the 1870 and 1880 Federal Censuses, their first child was born in Illinois around this time. According to the census, Ferdinand had been born in Wurtenburg, Germany in approxiamately 1834. Fredericka had been born around 1840 in Saxoney. The census also suggests that Ferdinand was a "teamster." The 1870 Census shows that the family lived in Chicago, Illinois. Also, Ferdinand is listed as a "U.S. citizen," suggesting that he had been naturalized. While residing in Illinois, the couple had the following children: Emma (@ 1864), Sofa (@ 1865) and Henry or Frank (@ 1870). Unfortunately, most vital records created prior to 1871 were destroyed in the Great Chicago Fire. Perhaps it was due to the Fire that the family moved to New York. Records show the family living in Queens, NY by 1872. By this time the family had grow with the addition of several more children: Jacob (@ 1872), Josephine (@ 1874), Minnie (@ 1879), William (@ 1881) and possibly others. The Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery - Middle Villabge, NY William Reichert's diary included a note that his parents were buried in the "Old Lutheran Cemetery." Following up on this lead I contacted the Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery and received confirmation of the burial of Ferdinand and Fredericka. Apparently, Ferdinand died at age 52 in Long Island City. He was buried at the All Faiths Cemetery on July 25, 1886. Fredericka died at age 54 at 133 6th Street, Long Island City; she was buried December 24, 1894 (Public Lot 21; Map 3A; Row 6; Grave 96). |
