Genealogy can be a lonely hobby spent with one's eyes glued in a book or on a computer screen. At times it can feel like time spent with ghosts, stealing me away from the present and the important people in my life -- so as time allows I continue my sleuthing, because I find myself drawn to explore the next clue, to unravel the next mystery. For me, the interest lies not in the collection of names and places and dates, but rather in uncovering the stories. The stories revealed through genealogy have given me greater appreciation for so many things: the great weight my grandparents placed in a college education; the gains to be made by taking risks; and the simple gift of sharing stories about an aunt, sister or dear friend that might otherwise be lost to future generations. Family and friends -- and the decisions they all make -- shape lives across generations. I dedicate this project to two amazing women who have touched and shaped the lives of so many. Deborah
