Fermanagh |
The earliest of the letters written by the HOWE family is dated April 15, 1883. Each of their letters are addressed "Claranagh, County Fermanagh, N. Ireland." Northern Ireland In the early 1600's, the British initiated "the plantation of Ulster" -- a plan to colonize the north of Ireland. Having run the Ulster Gaelic chiefs from their homes, the British planned to transfer the confiscated lands to English and Scottish settlers, forcing the Irish natives to poorer lands. This process lead to the influx of British loyalists of Anglican faith (“Planters”) to the counties of Ulster. It appears that the Howe family may have descended from these Planters. |
