There
is no record of Robert’s birth among the Church records provided by
Reverend Maurice Armstrong of St. Margaret’s Rectory, Parishes of
Tempo and Clabby. However, the 1901 Canadian Census shows 47 year-old
Robert as having been born 3 AUG 1853. The census suggests that Roberts
wife, Emma, was born in rural Ontario. Therefore, Robert and Emma
probably married after 1881 when he apparently immigrated to Canada.
This information is supported by evidence from the collection of letters.
In a letter from Joseph Howe (22 November 1887, Port Royal), he speaks
of Robert visiting two months earlier. Also, in 1887 while
Robert's sister Mary knew he was living in Canada, she was unaware
if her brother was married:
“Well
you wanted to know if Robert was morret [married]. He is.
He is long ago and the [they] have 2 children. I don’t here
from him very often. He lives at London.” (Oliver Howe, April
15, 1888, Port Royal)

Only
one letter from Robert himself exists within the collection, dated
22 July 1889 from Masonville. In it he describes how he and
his wife Emma milk cows.
“Emma
she is not very well. She has to work very hard know in
the summer as we try to do the most of the work our selves.
She milkes 6 cows every night now when I am so busy. I have
learned to milk since I came to this country. I can milk
a cow in 5 minutes. Our cows paid us well last year. We
got a chance to sell the most of the milk to a man that peddles
it around town. He came to the house for it and paid us
3 cents a quart for it but we have to make butter of some of it
this year and send some to the chees factory and butter is only
15 cents a pound here this summer. I ofter wonder how you
get along for milk in the city if your children is as fond of
it as ours are. It would cost a lot to buy it for them in
the town."

** It appears that the
year of birth for Ethel and John was recorded incorrectly. It they
were 17 and 15 years old, their years of birth would be 1884 and 1886,
not 1873 and 1875. View the actual
census sheet.
