The Death of Ned Hayden

The collection of letters contains no more from Edward J. Hayden, possibly because not long after this period Ned (age 38) was killed in an accident. We learn of this tragedy in a 15 April 1883 letter from Oliver & Jane Howe, Mary’s parents:

“Dear daughter, yours of 27 March is at hand and we are very sorry to hear of the sad accident to your husband. It must have been a terrible shock to you and also a great loss but it canot be helped now.  Dear daughter it must have come very hard upon you to bear up in such a trial but the Lord is strong for those who puts there trust in him and I hope and pray that he will protect the widow and orphans.”
An obituary appears in the Irish-American Newspaper (week ending March 31, 1883). It reads:
"HAYDEN -- March 19, at 627 West 52nd street, NY, Edward Hayden, a native of Dublin, aged 38 years.

Sources suggest that this address -- 627 West 52nd Street -- was in the "Hell's Kitchen" area of New York City, a neighborhood of second generation Irish and German working class families. This particular building held 16 families in 1880; though no Hayden was listed in the 1880 Census it is possible they lived there by 1883. Otherwise, this might have been the address at which the accident occurred. If the dates are correct, Mary was several months pregnant with her fourth child, Elizabeth, who was born in September 1883.

Edward's Death Certificate

Edward's death certificate (Manhattan #452576) shows that Edward, age 38 years and a native of Ireland, was "found at" 627 W 52 St; he was married and a painter. The certificate shows that he died on the 19th of March 1883 at 5 PM and that the cause of death was "fracture of the skull from fall from roof." Place of burial is noted as Calvary, dated March 22, 1883, with preparations being handled by an undertaker by the name of M. Walsh of 461 W 51st.

Calvary Cemetery

According to Calvary Cemetery (11-06-02; Woodside, NY), Edward Hayden was buried in graveholding 12-25-B-13 on march 22,1883. "The only other burial in the grave was Jean Karolewski, 3 years old and born in the United States on October 29, 1932. She was removed to Sec 9-Plot Q-Grave 10 on September 26, 1940. This grave was purchased by Victoria Karolewski and there are 12 burials in this grave." Interesting, one of Edward Hayden's grand-daughters, Mildred Reichert, married into a Karolewski family.
