County of Morris, 1784-1802 and Morris County index of marriages and
marriage records, 1795-1919.
- Extensive vertical file of clippings, brochures,
correspondences, and other printed ephemera yields a wealth of local and

organization records. The resources that are arranged and described in
finding aids include records of the Morris School District, Miss Dana's
School, Shakespeare Club of Morristown, papers of the Butterworth
family, the Kitchell family, the Tuttle-Hoff families, the Colles
family, and the Cutler family. The 4 scrapbooks of historical articles
by Aldus H. Pierson (1871-1943) about Morristown have been indexed, and

titles and deeds in the Chatham, Madison, Morristown, Morris Township

therefore access is limited to very special research projects, by
appointment. We also have Mr. Guy Minton's title search books on
properties throughout Morris County and indexing of these has been
completed.

atlases. They include the 1840-60 maps of all New Jersey counties, the
1850 map of Morristown, 1853 map of Morris County, and atlases of Morris
County published in 1868, 1887 and 1910. We also have on microfilm the
Sanborn fire insurance maps for towns in Morris County that are in the
Library of Congress collection.
- Moving into the computer age, we have acquired the
Family Search genealogy software program of the Church of Jesus Christ
of Latter Day Saints, thanks to a grant from the Highlands Regional
Library Cooperative.
- We have purchased Parts 1-17, 19, 20 and 22 of the
Genealogy and Local History microfiche series published by University
Microfilms International. This is a huge collection on microfiche of
several thousand largely out-of-print materials, including American
genealogies, genealogical serials, printed primary source titles and
local histories. We select parts of the series that concentrate on New
York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and New England. As funding becomes
available, we will acquire further issues.

Genealogy Holdings
The genealogical holdings provide one of the states richest sources of
information on New Jersey family history. The bulk of the records have
been deposited by the Genealogical Society of New Jersey and the New
Jersey State Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The
Rutgers genealogical collection is also significant. Most frequently
used are cemetery inscriptions, family Bible records and extensive
notes and compilations by professional genealogists, many of whom have
spent a lifetime studying the state's early families, both prominent
and obscure
Manuscripts Holdings
The Manuscript Collection consists of over 2,000 distinct collections
(more than 8,000,000 items). It is especially strong in and widely
known for collections in all aspects of New Jersey history and
society. Strengths include genealogy and family history.

Legal
Records
The
Library has microfilm of index cards compiled by Phyliss B. D'Autrechy
of records at the County Clerk's office and at the Surrogate's office.
The Library does not have the records themselves, but use of these
indexes will greatly speed the search for an ancestor at the Hall of
Records (on Main Street beside the old Court House in Flemington) or at
the Surrogate's Office (at the Justice Center, or new Court House, at
the corner of Capner and Park Streets in Flemington). Court and land
records (Reels 1-11, 16-18) are generally at the Hall of Records; the
Surrogate's Office probates wills, and decides guardianships (Reels
12-15).
Reels 6 to 11 contains names of plaintiffs and defendants in court
documents, and was compiled by the WPA around 1940. The documents
include:

New Jersey Historical
Society
The
library collections of The New Jersey Historical Society contain
manuscripts, rare and reference books, photographs, maps, broadsides,
pamphlets and other materials that document the cultural and historical
heritage of New Jersey from the colonial era through the 20th century.
The collections form the most comprehensive, privately-funded library on
New Jersey's past. The library is open to the public and serves a
diverse clientele including scholars, students of the humanities, local
historians, genealogists and others.
Books, Pamphlets & Newspapers
Documenting each phase of New Jersey's state and local history, the
library's books, pamphlets and broadsides consist of histories,
biographies, and reference works ranging from the earliest publications
in the state to the most current. The rare book collection includes over
1,000 pre-1850 imprints and documents the early history of printing in
New Jersey. The pamphlets and broadsides collected by the Historical
Society document the social, cultural, and political history of the
state by illustrating not only state-wide concerns, but also national
issues and concerns from the 18th-century to the present. Other
published works in the library include newspapers, periodicals, and The
New Jersey People and Places vertical files. The newspaper collection,
beginning with the 1777 New Jersey Gazette, offers first-hand accounts
of the events that have shaped the state's history. Newspapers are
maintained on microfilm and in their original form. The periodical
collection includes both old and current journals, newsletters, and
magazines for organizations such as churches, clubs, schools and the
activities of local governments.
The
Library also has resources such as city directories, local histories,
and vital records, original church records, and special indexes to New
Jersey materials that aid family historians.
Maps
The library's map collection documents the transformation of New
Jersey's rural and urban areas over the last three centuries. The more
than 2,000 maps include a number of 17th century Dutch maps, Abel
Buell's 1783 map showing the boundaries of the emerging states; "A Mapp
of New Jarsey" by John Seller and William Fisher (1677) and William
Faden's 1777 "Map of the Province of New Jersey, divided into East and
West." More recent maps such as city street maps, highway maps, and
topographical maps of the state are also in the collection.
