Sussex, England: as a ship's carpenter and member of the crew is believed to have voyaged to America first about 1621, again in 1624, when he remained a year, a third time in 1631 when he stayed at Cape Ann for an uncertain period, finally coming to first Lynn, MA on the ship "Abigail" with his two children and then to Sandwich, MA. in 1637 where he settled and remained until his death. Thomas Tupper who had come to Sandwich in 1637 with his daughter aged twelve and two year old son became an outstanding citizen of the community and developed exceptional ability. He served in the general court in 1644 and later was deputy for 20 years, from 1647 to 1677; he served on juries, local boards and commissions, was a charter member of the church and for three years from 1667 was selectman of the town. In his later years, when there was no settled minister, Mr. Tupper conducted religious services as layman and he was deeply interested in religious work among the Indians. Ruth Lucille Cole died yesterday at 4:20 PM in Porter Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. She was born March 16, 1909 to Charles W. and Lulu B. (Case) Rosenow in Fennville, Michigan. Following the death of her mother she was adopted in 1913 by William A. and Ruby A. Zuber of Holland, Michigan. After graduation from high school she studied piano and music at Hope College, later changing her course of study to nursing. She graduated with a degree in nursing after attending Western Michigan and the University of Michigan and attained a Master's Degree in nursing from St. Luke's Presbyterian and Loyola University in Chicago. She was licensed in Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois and pursued her career until the outbreak of World War II. During the war she was assigned as Flight Nurse in the 5th Army Medical Air Evacuation Corps and saw action in the South Pacific, specifically the Luzon Campaign. She was awarded the Bronze Battle Star and various Theater ribbons. She was separated from the service in 1947, having achieved the rank of Captain, and finally discharged in 1954. Among her more recent nursing duties, Ruth served as a nurse for U.S. Steel, for Porter County Schools, and as Supervisor of Surgical Nurses at Porter Memorial and Holland Community Hospitals. During her active service she married Lt. Jack Wilbur Cole October 5, 1946, and moved to Liberty Township, near Chesterton, Indiana, remaining there until 1977. They lived for a short time on a small farm near Saugatuck, Michigan, but her husband's ill health forced them to return to Liberty Township in 1989. She was preceded in death by a brother, Cecil William Rosenow of Fennville, Michigan, and by her natural and adoptive parents. Her husband survives, as do a step-son, Timothy Cole (Elaine), granddaughters Rebecca and Wendalyn Cole, all of Liberty Township, sister-in-law Mina Rosenow, and numerous nieces in Fennville.
