bulletLorenzo Albert BANCROFT was born in 1856 in New York. He was Biographical between 1860 and 1920 in Porter Co., IN.(3) BANCROFT
The following was excerpted from a few, torn, typed pages given me by Ivan COLE, son of Fred. H. COLE. There was no explanation concerning who wrote it or when. My only knowledge of the BANCROFT family is that Eliza, daughter of David Payne COLE, married Albert Lorenzo BANCROFT on 22 July, 1877. This Albert was born 8 June 1861 and died 17 January 1921. I’m sorry I must leave any further data to future researches, but I include this as it must come from an older BANCROFT source.
William BANCROFT January 1852
Albert December 1852
Lyman 1855
Franklin Simon 1858
Sarah Ann 1861
Mary Jane 1863
(Mama’s mother and our grandmother)
Henry William 1865
Rosa Lillian 1867
Lydia Amelia 1869
Etta Henrietta 1871
George Nelson 1873
Cyrus 1877
Charles Wesley 1880

Albert BANCROFT said that great grandfather William BANCROFT came to America with Lord York to colonize New York. His brother was Sir James Henry of Boston or Albany. His sons were Cyrus and William Ambrose (who are Mama’s grandfathers). William Ambrose was Albert BANCROFT and he served in the French and In-dian Wars with his brothers-in-law Hollis and Jim BROWN. He was captured and taken to Saginaw, Michigan, where he was held in a salt mine. During this time Grandma was told he was dead and she married Mr. ROBINSON. When Grandfather was free he came back and when he found Grandmother had remarried, he went back to Sagi-naw and built the BANCROFT House, bought a salt mine, and remarried.
Our great grandmother came from Germany and our Grandmother from England. All of the uncles and great uncles were married except Hollis. Pa says his great grandfather’s name was Captain Bill and he served in the war against England as an officer of some kind.
Grandpa was 26 years older than Pa, and Albert BANCROFT and Grandma were 22 years older. Grandmother was Mary Ann Millward and married to William Ambrose BANCROFT. That makes her our great grandmother. William BANCROFT’s mother was Mary BROWN and her brother was Henry BROWN. William BANCROFT’s father was Capt. Billie and he came to this country with the Duke of York who came to colonize New York. The Duke’s brother was Earl of Albany and colonized Albany.
Grandpa had two half brothers, Joe and Bill ROBINSON, who went west with the Gold Rush. Both were in the Civil War. Grandmother had one brother, Mose Millward and an uncle who came to New York State near Niagara Falls and that is where Dad was born, Lewistown, N.Y. Grandmother was born in Devonshire, England. The last known about Mose was from Midland, Michigan, but Joe ROBINSON’s daughter lived in FonDuLac, and her name was Mattie. Uncle Henry was in Texas.
