Peter Wilfong Whitener (M)
b. 5 January 1840

     Peter Wilfong Whitener was born on 5 January 1840. He was mlt induction in April 1861; Peter enlisted in Co. A, 12th North Carolina Regiment in April 1861. He was wounded during the Seven Days Battles on 27 June 1862. After his convalescence, he returned to his regiment and fought and was wounded at Gettysburg on 1 July 1863. He lost his leg due to this wound. He married Catherine Elizabeth Shuford, daughter of George Philip Shuford and Anna Eliza Baker, in 1862; Peter was wounded in the Seven Days Battle in Virginia and married Catherine during his convalescence leave.
