Our research

We are keen to trace other Thorn families with family information.

The Thorn(e) name is very common, so there are many Thorn(e) families who will never be connected to our line here in England. However, if you have published your family information in the web we will gladly add you as a Link from this site.

Location of family members - England

We know that the family origins are in Weedon, Buckinghamshire during the 17th century. Weedon is near to Aylesbury, Bucks. A few members of the Thorn family moved to Buckland, then in to the Chiltern Hills (to the villages of Buckland Common, Hawridge and Cholesbury).

Our family comes from Richard Thorn who was born in Buckinghamshire in about 1684, he was buried at St. Mary the Virgin, Hardwick with Weedon, Bucks. on 1 November 1751. Richard Thorn married Elizabeth Provis on 23 March 1712/13 in Billington, Bedfordshire, they then lived in Weedon, Bucks.

Richard Thorn was a victualler.

Many of our early ancestors were agricultural labourers who must have gained employment on the local farms. We believe that family members spread from Weedon, Buckland and the Chiltern villages to find employment.

Our family comes from a line that moved to Watford just before the census of 1881.

We would dearly love to make contact with other Thorn(e) families in the UK. So, if you’re out there – send us an e-mail and let us see if there are family connections.

Location of family members - Abroad

The only directly connected Thorn family line we have been able to find outside England is in South Africa. These family members come from the late Ivan Allan Jack Thorn and his wife Iris. We have had mail contact with Iris Thorn.

There are Thorne descendants in the USA.

We would dearly love to make contact with other Thorn families outside the UK. So, if you’re out there – send us a mail and let us see if there are connections.

What can we share ?

Our family data is all held in a Family Tree Maker database and is far to large to place on this site in its entirety.

We are happy to share our information, however you will need to use Family Treemaker Version 8.0 or later to read these files.

We have a collection of family photos which we are adding to this site.

We have some copies of birth, marriage and death certificates for the family since the records began in 1837. We can supply copies of those.

What can you do ?

If you have any information on the family, you can help by adding to this archive. What are we looking for:-

bulletAny family records - documents, registration certificates, photographs and press cuttings etc.
bulletAny family stories - no matter how trivial they may seem, every detail gives a insight to our forebears.
bulletCan you help with further research in your locality?
bulletCan you fill in missing details, particular in the family history file where dates and locations are "unknown"?
bulletWould you like to provide an insight into yourself or your ancestors? These we can add as Articles.

The most important thing you can do is to get in contact or give some feedback.
