a surname on our paternal side
There are many Winge families in Norway as well as in Prussia, esp. Silesia. Families emigrated to Utah, Montana and Missouri, and Texas.
My Winge ancestors (Wilhelm and Martha) came from Schönthal and Frankenstein, respectively, in Silesia, which was in Prussia, but now is in Poland. The presence of Winge and Teichgraeber families in Silesia can be seen in the IGI database on www.familysearch.org
Wilhelm Winge, with his wife (Martha Teichgraeber) and three children, immigrated to the U.S. in 1880, indicating that St. Louis was their destination. Why did they choose St. Louis? Perhaps because there was already a Winge family in the area: John Winge, who in 1870 was living in St. Louis County. If this John Winge was of German birth, the probability of Wilhelm knowing him is clear. If John was of Norwegian (or Scandinavian) birth, the two men most likely were strangers. In 1870 there were other Winge families in Missouri. However, there were no Winge families in the city of St. Louis in 1870 or in 1860. The 1880 Census for St. Louis does list our Winge family, minus one child who undoubtedely died. The 1880 St. Louis City Directory has no Winge family but the 1881 directory does list a William Winge, carpenter, who is probably Wilhelm Winge discussed above, since he was a cabinet maker.
When looking up the Swedish, Norwegian, and Danish words for the English "wing" we find that all three languages use "vinge". In old usage the initial "v" in many words was a "w" from the Teutonic heritage. Now the letter "w" is seldom used at the beginning of a word in the Scandinavian languages. Note that in German the initial "w" is pronounced like the English "v" and the final "e" is pronounced. This meaning of the "Winge" surname is reinforced by the two coat of arms below which prominently display wings.
The asterisk marks a direct-line ancestor. The (-2G), etc. after the name indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma and his siblings.

Winge Coats of Arms
The left coat-of-arms is probably more closely related to my Winge family. The one on the right seems to indicate that the surnames Winge and Winia were synonymous in Frise, which is an area now in The Netherlands.
