St. Anthony of Padua R. C. Church

Located at Meramec and Michigan Ave. in south St. Louis (Marquette-Cherokee area). The parish was founded in 1863 by the Franciscan Fathers in connection with their monastery. First services were held in a frame house on the same land. From 1865 until ca. 1869 services were held at the monastery. A stone Gothic-style church was completed in 1869. Parochial schools were opened in 1870. In 1872 the monastery was enlarged into a theological seminary. The present Romanesque-style brick church building was begun in 1910. The twin spires are 175 feet high and flank a central gable. The St. Anthony High School was erected in 1922; the present monastery in 1931; and the parochial schoo in 1962.
