Castle Garden Immigration Center - A fort was built to protect the New York city harbor during the War of 1812. This Southwest Battery was maned but no shots of defense were fired. In 1817 it was renamed Castle Clinton; in 1821 it was vacated by the military. It was renamed Castle Garden in 1824 when it was turned into a restaurant and entertainment center. Then it was used as an opera house and theater until 1854. From 1855 until 1890 it served as the New York immigration center. After 1890 Ellis Island became the immigration center.
