'Sleepy Hollow' Clubhouse in JEDBURGH, MISSOURI
A 'clubhouse' owned by the Erven Thake family in the 1930's and 1940's. It is located near the banks of the Meramec River, southwest of St. Louis, within St. Louis County. The Union Pacific RR ran along the river, crossing it at one point. I remember signaling with a red lantern for the train to stop so that we could catch a ride to Kirkwood and then get back to our homes in St. Louis. The clubhouse was named after the locality in the Rip van Winkle story. The name suggest that the clubhouse was a family place to relax. I distinctly remember the good times we had at 'Sleepy Hollow'--the barbeques, the fishing, the horseshoe games, the swing hanging from the tree, the homemade ice cream, the large screened porch, the card games, the good meals, the visits with relatives and family friends. I remember playing with my first cousin, Chuck Thake, and my second cousin, as well as my brother. Some time well after Erven Thake died (d. 1944), the clubhouse was sold.
