Emma A. Winge (-2G)
one of our paternal great aunts
*marks direc-line ancestors. The (-2G), etc., after the names
indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma. Siblings born before her include: Adelheid (Adeline)* (-2G) (b. 23 Apr. 1876), Hedwig (Hattie) (-2G) (b. 13 Sep. 1877), Martha Winge (-2G) (b. Jan/Feb. 1880), Margaretha (-2G) (b. 2 Sep. 1881), William (-2G) (b. 19 May 1883), Robert (-2G) (b. 30 May 1885), and Frances (-2G) (b. 23 Oct. 1886). Siblings Martha, Margaretha and Robert died before Emma was born. The Marty grave monument in Sunset Memorial Park gives 18 Sep. 1888 as her birth date. The St. Louis Birth Register 1850-1929, specifically the 1888-89 A-Z reel (microfilm 929.3778, No. C624, Sep. 1888) lists an Emma Winke [sic!], born on the 18th, white female, address 3811 Texas, father Wilhelm from Germany, mother Martha from Germany. The informant is a name like Volker (perhaps a midwife or doctor). The address matches that for Emma's father in the St. Louis Directory of 1887. There is no other birth with a similar name in September. Her middle initial may stand for Adelheid, the first name of one of her sisters (my grandmother). The 1890 Census was destroyed by fire but the 1890 St. Louis City Directory shows her father, a carpenter, living at 3742 Oregon Ave. The 1891 Directory shows the father as a cabinet maker, living at the same address. The 1892 Directory shows him as a cabinet maker, living on the north side of Neosho, near 16th St. The 1893 and 1894 Directories list him as a carpenter living on the north side of Neosho, near 17th St. The 1895 Directory calls him a cabinet maker, living at the same address. The 1896 Directory also calls him a cabinet maker, but he is living at 4449 S. 17th St. The 1897-99 Directories list William, cabinet maker, living at 4460 S. 17th St.
She is listed in the 1900 Fed. Census for Missouri, district 179, sheet 6, line 48 for St. Louis. The address is 4460 South 17th St. With her are her parents, sisters Adelheid and Frances, and brothers Alois, Johann, Wilhelm (William), and Theodore. Sister Hedwig has married and moved to her own home. Emma is 11 years old, was born in Missouri and can read and write, inc. English. When her sister Adeline got married on 20 Dec. 1904, the family was living at 4460 S. 17 St. in St. Louis.
She is listed in the 1910 Missouri Census, vol. 104, district 206, sheet 198. With her are her parents, brother Alois, brother Johann, and brother Theod. Emma is 21 years old and is listed as a helper to her mother. Brother William and sisters Adeline and Francis are living on their own. The 1910 St. Louis Directories list her father as a cabinet maker living at 4460 S. 17th St. She married Frederick E. Marty on 27 May 1910. A Justice of the Peace performed the ceremony in St. Louis. She was 21, living at 4460 S. 17th St.; he was 22, living at 4400 Virginia Ave. (application 157169, license vol. 73, page 204). Son Fred Joseph Marty Jr. (-1G) was born in Missouri on 24 Jan. 1912 The 1916 St. Louis Directory shows Frederick E. Marty, grocer, living at 4501 Virginia Ave. Daughter Marie M. Marty (-1G) was born in St. Louis on 17 June 1917. The 1918 Dir. has Fredk Marty, gro [grocer], 4501 Virginia Av.
The 1920 Census in Missouri (vol. 98, district 249, sheet 7) list her, her husband and two children. They are living in their own house at 4501 Idaho Ave. in St. Louis. Frederick is 31, born in California. His mother was born in Missouri; his father in Switzerland. He is listed as a merchant who owns a grocery store. Emma is also 31 years old, born in Missouri. The two children were born in Missouri. They include son Fred. Jr, 7 years old, born in Missouri, and daughter Marie, 2 years old, also born in Missouri. The 1924 St. Louis Directory has Fredk Marty, gro [grocer] at 4501 Virginia Ave., living at the same address. The 1925-27 Directories have the same information. The 1926 County Dir. has no Fred Marty. Father died on 31 Mar. 1928 in St. Louis, MO. The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1235, enum. dist. 96-481, supv. dist. 9, printed page 237, sheet 9A, lines 27-30, house 135, family 242, dated April 7) show Emma and her family living at 4501 Virginia in St. Louis (ward 13, block 2697). Emma is 41 years old, born in Missouri, with parents born in Germany. She was married at age 21 and has two children. She is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. There is no listed occupation for Emma. Her husband, Fred, is 42, was born in California of a father born in Switzerland and a mother born in Missouri. He is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. He was married at age 22. His occupation is manager at a grocery store. He was not a war veteran. They own their house which is valued at $30,000. It is not a farm. Their son, Fred, is 18 years old, was born in Missouri of a father born in California and a mother born in Missouri. He is attending school and can read, write, and speak English. No occupation is listed for him. Emma's daughter Marie is 13 years old, born in Missouri of a father born in California and a mother born in Missouri. She is in school and can read, write, and speak English. She has no occupation. The family has a radio set. The 1936 St. Louis Dir. has Fredk (Emma) Marty, grocer at 4501 Virginia Ave, home address the same. The St. Louis Directory of 1937 shows Fred Marty (with wife Erma [sic!]), a grocer, business and home at 4501 Virginia. The 1939 Directory has the same information. No Fred Marty appears in the 1941 County Dir. The 1942 St. Louis Dir. has Fred E. Marty, pres-treas of Assoc. Grocers Co. of St. Louis, with a home at 4501 Virginia Ave. The 1946 City Dir. has Fred (Emma) Marty, pres-treas Assoc. Grocers Co. of St. Louis, with a home at 4401a Virginia Ave. There is a Fred Ernest Marty (S.S.# 489-05-1268) in the S. S. Death Index who was born 15 Aug. 1891. He filed the application on 28 Nov. 1936 when he was living at 3007 South 18th St. in St. Louis and was working for Busch-Sulzer Bros. Diesel Engine Co. at Second and Utah Sts. in St. Louis. He died in Oct. 1965 in Missouri. This person is not the husband of Emma; it also is not her son because the listed parents are incorrect. The St. Louis Post Dispatch of 03 Jan. 1947 has an obituary on page 8C for the correct Fred. Marty. The obituary says he died at his home, 4501a Virginia at 11:55 PM. It names Emma (née Winge) as his wife. The Marty grave monument in Sunset Memorial Park gives the death date of a Fred E. Marty as 1 Jan. 1947. I will have to do more research to locate death certificates and S. S. applications. According to a letter from the S. S. Administration her husband had the S. S. number 494-09-4328 but a search in the S. S. Death Index does not show anyone with that number. Emma never had a S.S.# of her own before she filed for benefits under her husband's number. Brother John A. Winge (-2G) died sometimes between 1945 and 1971, probably in Jackson, MS.
Sister Hedwig (Hattie) died on 16 May 1967 in St. Louis. Sister Adeline Winge died on 10 May 1970 in St. Louis County. Her daughter Marie Marty (-1G) died 30 Jan. 1971 of colon cancer. But on the grave monument in Sunset Memorial Park the death date is 10 Jan. 1971, and according to the obituary it is the 30th. Her S. S. number was 487-68-6907, issued in 1973 in MO. Application was made on 1 May 1972. At the time of her application or death she was living at 4501a Virginia Ave. in St. Louis. Emma never had a S.S.# of her own before she filed for benefits under her husband's number. Brother William died on 14 Feb. 1973 in St. Louis. Brother Aloys died in December 1975 in St. Louis County, MO. When she died on 9 July 1980 her residence was zip code area 63111 in St. Louis. She was buried in Sunset Memorial Park in St. Louis.
In Cisco, Eastland County, Texas there was an Emma Winge, born 8 Apr. 1911, died in Jan. 1986, who last lived in Zip Code 76437. Her S. S. # is 451-17-2165 issued in Texas in 1973. In the same location there was an E. Winge, born 12 Sep. 1912, died 2 May 1993 and a Martha Winge, born 24 Aug. 1906, died 10 Jan. 2000. These could be distant relatives whose ancestors shared the same first names and last names as the St. Louis Winge families or they could be related to Emma Hill in Texas who sent me much material on Silesia (wbehill@txucom.net). Brother Theodore Winge (-2G) died on 25 Dec. 1988 in Troy, MO. Emma's son, Fred. J. Marty (-1G) died on 16 Oct 1992.
