Alberta P. Thoma (-1G)
The asterisk marks direct-line ancestors. The (-1G), etc. after the names indicates the number of generations before Erven Thoma. Born before Alberta (and Albert) was a brother, Emil Otto Thoma* (-1G), on 11 Dec. 1906 in St. Louis. - - - - - Below: from her birth (Feb. 1912) until the 1920 Census - - - - - She was born and raised in St. Louis, MO. For part of her married life she lived in Missouri, Texas, Minnesota, California, Utah and perhaps Hawaii. Her last years were lived at the house of her brother, Emil Otto Thoma, 9563 Yuma Dr., and then at an apartment in St. Louis County. She did not bear or adopt children.
The 1913 St. Louis Directory shows Alberta's father, Emil Thoma, cabmkr (cabinetmaker) living at 3125 Meramec. A duplicate entry in 1913 shows him living at 4403a Virginia Ave. because the family moved that year. The 1915 St. Louis City Directory lists her father, cabinetmaker, living at 440_a Virginia Ave.
In 1917-18 she and her siblings were attending Neosha elementary school (south St. Louis) in temporary facilities. The 1920 Fed. Census for Missouri (vol. 98, enum. district 250, sheet 5, line 42) shows her living with her parents and brothers at 4657 Idaho Ave. in St. Louis, MO. Her mother is 42, born in Germany, and is naturalized. Her father is 44, born 1874 in Germany, citizenship in 1900. She and her brothers, all born in Missouri, are Emil 13, Albert 8 and Alberta 8. In 1920-21 she and her brothers were attending Scruggs elementary school in south St. Louis. She and her twin probably graduated from the school in 1926. The 1922 St. Louis City Directory lists her father Emil, cabinetmkr., living at 4624 Virginia Ave. We can assume that Adeline and the three children are living there too.
She and her family probably moved to 3210 Osceola St. between 1922 and 1926. The St. Louis City Directory of 1926 lists her husband as a cabinetmaker, living at 3210 Osceola. Also listed as living there is her eldest son, Emil Otto, a carpenter. Since the other children are only 13 or 14 at this time, we can assume they are living there too. We can assume that Adeline is also there. The 1930 Fed. Census for Missouri (T626_1233, enum. dist. 432, supv. dist. 9, page 17B, lines 69-73, house #253, family #389) shows Alberta and her family at 3210 Osceola St. in St. Louis (city) (ward 11, block 2699). Her father, Emil, is 54 years old, born in Germany, parents also born in Germany. He immigrated in 1893 [actually the last days of 1892] and has the naturalization status of "Na". German was his native tongue. His occupation is listed as cabinet maker at a fixture co. but he is not presently working. He is not in school but can read, write, and speak English. He was married at age 30. He was not a war veteran. He and his wife are renting at $30 per month and own a radio set. Her mother, Adeline, is 53 years old, born in Germany, her parents also born in Germany. 1881 was given as her year of immigration [really 1880] and her naturalization status as "Na". German was her native tongue. She can read, write, and speak English, but is not in school. No occupation is given for her. Alberta's brother Emil, is 23, born in Missouri, his parents born in Germany. He is single, is not in school, but reads, writes, and speaks English. His occupation is carpenter in the house trade and his is presently employed. Alberta and her twin brother Alberta are both 18, born in Missouri, their parents born in Germany. They are not in school but read, write and speak English. The twins have no occupation and are both single. The St. Louis City Directory of 1930 lists her father Emil as a cabinetmaker living at 3110 Osceola. We can assume that all of his family are living there too. The son Emil Otto has a separate listing as a carpenter. Alberta has a separate listing as a clerk at Wolff-Wilson D. Co. The 1931 Directory shows them at 3210 Osceola. Why the discrepancy in address numbers? Albert is listed separately as a plasterer and Alberta as a clerk. The 1932 Directory also shows the family at 3210 Osceola. Albert is listed separately as a plasterer and Alberta as an indry. worker. Emil O. (my father) is also listed separately.
At the time of John Harland's (Mac's) S. S. application (3 Dec. 1936), Mac and Alberta were living at 951 S. Western Ave. in Los Angeles, CA. He was working at the National Institute of Music and Arts at the same address. I suppose it was his own business. His S. S. number is 567-16-2189. Her S.S. number is 456-16-8550 issued in Texas before 1951. At the time of her S.S. application she was living at 2102 Jackson in Houston, Texas. She was employed at the Jay Scott Studio at 903 Rusk in Houston. She was 26 years old on the application date, 15 Mar, 1938. She started working for the studio on 11 Mar., 1938. Her date of birth, place of birth, and parents' names are in agreement with other sources. The birth certificate I have was filed Sept. 21, 1939 with the Dept. of Health of Missouri Vital Statistics. This certification says that Alberta's mother was 35 years old and her father was 37 years old. The birth certification is state file No. 124-12-043738. Another number on the birth certification is: B9999-999999. It could be that all there was previously was a baptism record, perhaps from St. Anthony's Church in St. Louis. In Mar. 1940 she was traveling in Mexico. This was her first time out of the country according to correspondence. In June 1942 they lived in New Orleans. My mother's brother (Winfield) visited them then. In July 1942 Alberta moved back to St. Louis and probably lived with her mother. In Jan. & Feb. 1943 she was living in Ft. Worth, Texas, probably with her husband. Their address was 213 W. Leuda. In June of 1944 Alberta and Harland visited his parents and brother's family at his parents' home in Mena, Arkansas. In January of 1946 Alberta and her husband were living at 3413 Portland in Minneapolis, MN. Her mother came up to spend some extended time there. By July of the same year her mother had gone back to St. Louis. In Dec. of 1946 Alberta and Harland were still in greater Minneapolis. Her father died on 11 Dec. 1948 in St. Louis. He was cremated. In July 1954, Alberta and her husband were living at 209 Elizabeth in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In Dec. 1968 and in 1969 Alberta and her husband were living in Burbank, CA. Her mother died 10 May 1970 in St. Louis County. Between her mother's death and 1972 Alberta moved into the room at the home of her brother Emil at 9563 Yuma Dr. in St. Louis County. This was the room formerly occupied by her mother, Adeline before 1970. In 1972, when living on Yuma, she worked for a while at a Steak & Shake on south Lindbergh Rd. In 1974 she was still working there. Her husband died in June 1975 while in South America. Alberta was living at her brother's house at this time and continued to live there until Emil moved to a different house where there was no separate quarters for her. Then she moved to apartments in the vicinity. Twin brother Albert Thoma (-1G) died in 4 August 1987 at St. Louis County, MO
