Miller from Rossville Georgia, dated Dec 25, 1863 to Richard Shadle. Miller obviously was part of the Army surrounded in Chattanooga a couple of months before This poses a question about supplies. Miller mentions that it is Christmas time, evidently they must still have been on short rations. I thought I would drop you a few lines to let you know of my present unhappy condition. I am well as usual but we are knowing rather hard times for rations., only three crackers in (".7) for ane mans meal. Gur horses have not had any feed for two days. They were nearly starved, but we will get some corn this evening. Dick, I don't mind soidering, but I dor 't like to see my horse go hungry, but I hope we will not stay here very long.,l hope not. We were 8 days coming to this place. lt is 4 miles trom Chattanooga at the West end of Mission ridge. Our army is out beyond us some 30 miles, the 38th is down in town.. I am going to see them if i can.
