The Tie That Binds                 Weire  Album

Theories on Mary W. Weire Simpson

For several years,  I searched for the parents of Mary
W. Weire Simpson. Statistics show she was born 22 July 1861
in Farmington, Van Buren Co., IA. I had searched the 1870
census records for a Mary Wire [variant spellings] aged 9
in Van Buren Co., IA, living in the home of a William Wire
and found none. There is a Mary Wire, aged 9, living in the
home of Fred Wire, in the 1870 Van Buren Co., IA census. In
the next dwelling, on the census, is a William Wire family.

1850 Van Buren Co., IA census lists  Wilhelmina Wyre a widow
and her family. She was born in Hesse Cassel; sons Just and
Frederick also born in Hesse Cassel; son Wm. born in MD;
daughters Wilmina, Elizabeth and son John born PA;
son Phillip born IA. This family can be followed through
the census.

Confirmed through Civil War pension records, this is the family
from which Mary W. Wiere Simpson descends. The Mary,
aged 9, who is living with Fred and Nancy Wire on the 1870
census is their niece, so far no other census records show
a child living in their home. The will of Frederick Wire, dated
24 November 1909, proved 23 August 1910, Van Buren Co., IA
Probate File # 3273 lists only his wife, as heir. The obituary
of Frederick Weiher does not list surviving children. Mary Simpson
lists her father born Pennsylvania on her census records and
William Wire is listed born in Pennsylvania on the 1880 census record.
I feel,  Mary is living with Fred and Nancy Wire in 1870 because her
father remarried and she may not have been happy with his remarriage.
1860 Van Buren Co., IA census lists  William Wire, wife Margaret, and
1 year old son, John T.  In 1870 William is married to a Josephine,
aged 22, John aged 10 years, and 6 year old female N. E., in the home.
A copy of a marriage record Van Buren Co., IA, dated 27 May 1866
proves William H. Wire's marriage to Caroline Fennekohl.
I suspect her name is Josephine Caroline Fenekohl or Caroline Josephine
Fenekohl, as from 1880 on she is listed as Caroline on the census
and the age stays consistent each census. William and Caroline Wire
died in Taylor Co., IA and are buried there. Caroline Wire left a will.
Copy of her will on hand.

I also feel Mary Wire Simpson’s name is Mary Wilhelmina Weire.
She is listed as Mary W. Weir Simpson in the obituary of her son,
Thomas, on his death in 1980.  I suspect she is named for her paternal
grandmother, Maria Wilhelmina Stebenson Weir Fenekohl.

Mary Simpson also named a daughter Wilhelmina. This is documented
in the 1900 census. The daughter went by Bessie N. Simpson.

The 1895 Iowa state census for Van Buren Co., IA lists a Martha
Simpson in the home of Fred and Nancy Wire. Martha is also
listed in the home of her parents Thomas and Mary Simpson.
The 1895 Iowa state census for Van Buren County also lists
a Wilma Simpson in the home of Thomas and Mary Simpson.
I feel this was Wilhelmina Simpson, as this was an abstract
of the 1895 Van Buren Co., IA State Census.
