This is the last census on which Ellen is enumerated.
Before his marriage to Ellen Boyer, John Murphy was married to Margaret Mullen. Margaret
Mullen Murphy bore two sons, before her death. Murphy family
history relates that John worked as a steamboat captain on the Mississippi
between Cairo, IL and New Orleans, LA. After Margaret's death he placed the two
boys in a Catholic Home in St. Louis, MO. Several of the children of John and
Ellen Boyer Murphy list place of birth as St. Louis, MO.
I have found record of four land purchases for John Murphy of St. Louis, MO for
land in Van Buren Co., IA.
