"Watched Newark Grow -- Many old-timers will recall the Aschenbach family which was identified with the early history of Newark. A harness maker by trade, Elijah Aschenbach and his wife came to America from Germany about the year 1840 and established a harness business here. This photo shows the couple and their family, William, George, Chris, Charles and Henry Aschenbach; Mrs. Mary Burr, Mrs. Joseph Garrigues, Mrs. Hannah Squire, Mrs. Mary Bimbler and Mrs Francis Curtis in 1868. Submitted by Mrs G. Gormley." Marjorie Aschenback - granddaughter of Charles Frederick Aschenbach, (Charles C. is father) 281 Avenue C, New York, NY 10009 (1980). Margaret is one seated at the far right on the picture. Two separate identifications of the family members in photo. One from Bill Batchelor a descendant, and one from Honey Swain. Honey is a Burr family relative (still living 1986), that knew and still remembered the people in the photo. Honey's identifications made more sense, so we have accepted them as being right. Bill's was significantly different. We have a list of both.
