GEORGIANA FFARINGTON BARRIE  [1825-1873]

[SISTER MARY ALOUSIUS GONZOGA FRANCIS]

She was the born on the 2nd August 1825 at Lostock Hall, Walton-le-Dale, Lancashire, the youngest daughter of Sir Robert Barrie and Lady Julia Wharton Ingilby. She took up the Catholic faith, even though her parents were Protestants, and when she was 23, she joined The Sisters of Mercy.

She went with Florence Nightingale to the Crimea, and was to continue her correspondence with her for many years. On her return she went on to found the St. John and Elizabeth Hospice in London. She became Mother Superior, at her convent in Bermondsey, London.

She died of typhus fever, on 16th April 1873, at the Convent of Mercy, Parkers Row, Dockhead, Bermondsey, London. She is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery, London in a communal plot for the Sisters of Mercy.

MARY STANLEY [ - ]

Mary Stanley was the sister of Dr Stanley, Canon of Canterbury, later Dean Stanley of Westminster.

In 1854, she published a book entitled `Hospitals and Sisterhoods`.  The first chapter referred mainly to the shortage of chaplains and the opportunities for spiritual regeneration.  The shortcomings of the wards were totally ignored.  Alton with other women who spent there time with sick described themselves not as nurses but `ladies`, who were more concerned with the souls of their patients than their bodies.

She took a party of forty-six nurses to the Crimea, consigned to Dr Cumming.  The party consisted of 9 ladies, 15 nuns, and 22 nurses, they were escorted by Dr Meyer, a physician, and the Hon Jocelyn Percy MP.  When they arrived on the French vessel `Egypt` there was no accommodation for them, Dr Cummings refused to take responsibility for.  Mary Stanley`s plan was that her party of nurses should be used as female ecclesiastic, to assist the chaplains and priests.  With Mother Bridgeman and ten of her nurses she went to Koulali.  When they arrived Koulali was not ready.  Two steamers had arrived with 300 sick and wounded, with no beds or food ready, sacks were hastily filled with straw.  She felt her health would not stand up to the demands the hospital put on it, and she returned home in March?

ST THOMAS`S HOSPITAL

MRS WARDROPER [ -1892]

Mrs Wardroper was a pioneer of nursing reform, and was the matron of St Thomas's hospital. She had been appointed matron in 1853. A gentlewoman by birth she had been left a widow with young children. At the age of forty-two she had taken up nursing. At that time training was unknown, and she learnt what she could on the wards. She held the post of superintendent of the Nightingale Training School for twenty-seven years. She would be in constant correspondence with Florence about the probationers. She retired as matron in 1887. She died in 1892.

AGNES JONES [ -1868]

Agnes Jones was the daughter of Colonel Jones of Londonderry, and the niece of Sir John Lawrence. She had become inspired by Miss Nightingale's work in the Crimea, and persuaded her family to allow her to go to Kaiserwerth in 1860. In 1863, she completed her training at the Nightingale School at St Thomas's. When she completed her training, she went to the Great Northern Hospital and was working there as a sister when she was offered the post of Matron at the Liverpool Workhouse Infirmary in 1864. She died of typhus on February 10th 1868.
