The following letter courtesy of the United Church, Victoria University Archives. The First Methodist Church on Wolfe Island Submitted to United Church Archives by Allen O. Keyes of Wolfe Island. Date: ??? The first Methodist Church on Wolfe Island was situated on the East corner of the North half of Lot 3 in the ninth Concession. It was of frame structure, and was built mainly through the efforts of the late George Keyes, in 1857 and 1858. It was used until the present brick church was built in the village in 1886, and dedicated in February, 1887. This frame structure and the property surrounding it was purchased by the late George Keyes in 1876, from the Montreal Conference. It was taken down in 1930 by Allen O. Keyes, the youngest son, who now owns the property. The senior gentleman was interested in all church work on the Island. He died in 1924 at the age of 86 years, and was buried in Point Alexander Cemetery, just inside the small gate. This information was compiled by members of the Keyes family; who are still active in Church work. There have been five generations of the Keyes’ on the homestead. |
