November 18, 1863 A cry of distress was heard by Sergeant Lyn yesterday morning between 4 and 5 o'clock, proceeding from the water in the direction of Garden Island. This circumstance, taken in connection with the drifting ashore of a skiff at Holcomb & Cowan's wharf, lends to the supposition that some one has been drowned. The skiff belonging to a Mr. Watt, who lives on Garden Island; and it is stated that the skiff was taken away from the Island by some unknown person on the previous night. Three men belonging to Garden Island are said to be missing, having last been seen when leaving a tavern in Kingston on Monday night, and it is feared that they have been drowned while endeavoring to make their way home. The names of the missing men, who were in the employ of Mrssrs Calvin and Breck, are John Parker, Lawrence Nugent, and Thomas Donnelly. November 19, 1863 The Missing Men - The men reported in yesterday's News as missing from Garden Island had not turned up yesterday evening. A rumor was in circulation during the morning that one of the missing persons had been seen in the streets alive and well, but the report was not credited, and it is greatly to be feared that the men were drowned while endeavoring to reach the Island in the boat which was picked up on Tuesday. November 23, 1863 The Missing Men - A number of persons were out in the harbor on Saturday gragging for the bodies of the men who are believed to have been drowned a few nights since while crossing to Garden Island in a skiff, but up to a late hour they had not been successful. June 10, 1864 Inquest - An inquisition was held this morning by Coroner Jenkins on the body of Lawrence Nugent, who was drowned in November last, with two others, while passing over to Garden Island in a small boat. The body was found yesterday evening, in an advanced stage of decomposition. The jury returned a verdict of accidentally drowned. The bodies of those who were drowned at the time Nugent met his death have not yet been recovered. July 12, 1864 Coroner's Inquest - A Coroner's Inquest was held this morning by Mr. Coroner Jenkins, on the body of a man discovered yesterday evening by the Captain of the steamer Gazelle, floating on the water beyond the shoal tower, and which was afterwards towed into the slip at the foot of Clarence street. The body proved, as was anticipated, to be one of the three men who were drowned in passing from the city to Garden Island last fall. The mother of the deceased identified him by his clothing, as John Parker, one of the three men referred to - Nugent having already been found, and Donnelly being still missing. The verdict of the jury was, "That John Parker was accidentally drowned while passing to Garden Island in a skiff, on the 15th November last." August 15, 1864 Body Found - The body of Donnelly, the last of the three men who were drowned in Nobemver 1863, while crossing from Kingston to Garden Island in a skiff, was turned up by the steamer Gazelle this morning, and brought to the dead house slip. The body was in a frightful state of decomposition, and was recognized by the clothing. Inquests having been held on the bodies of the other who, it was not necessary to summon a jury in this case, and the body will be disposed of by the friends of the deceased. |
