Wolfe Island School: S.S.#9Does anyone have a photo of this school??? 1st school built before 1878 on rear Con 3 This one replaced by school put on Con 4 lot 1 Most recent school: Built: 1904 Location: Con 4 lot 1 Closed: 1939 At present: Moved to village and used as a home until burned in 2005 1850 freehold log house 20 x 25 log in good repair, one room with desks, playground and privy. 1851 school into operation 1844 – building built 1849 leese. 1856 reports say school built 1847 leese – first opened 1848. 1859 –Also known as Prot Separate school - paid $183 for purchase of school site and building of school house during 1859. School house frame built 1859 freehold. 1860 – $93.25 paid in year to purchase a school site and build school house. On base line in Conc 4 in 1878 (in 1878 tenants map Con IV Lot1, land owned by Patrick Lyon) Apparently replaced school which sat on the opposite side on the rear of Conc 3 sometime after 1872. Most recent school on this spot built in 1904 by Wm Grimshaw. Was moved to the village and used as a home until this year (2005) when it burned down. It closed in 1939 From E.E. Some of the early settlers were George Friend, R. Mosier, Dave Watts, James McAllister, Patrick O'Rielly, David Bustard,Louis Yott. This school is a frame building 25 ft. x 18 ft. and was built by William Grimshaw in the year 1904. The furniture consists of two rows of double seats, Quebec heater, library, teacher's desk and Chair. It contains the following equipment: 11 maps, library valued at $80., one globe, and cube. The first Board of Trustees was George Friend, chairman, R. Mosier, and David Watts. The first teacher was Fred Witmarsh until Christmas, then Claudia Mackie, without Normal training, at a salary of $240. paid yearly. The following subjects were taught: Reading, Writing, Arithmatic, Grammer, Geography, History, Drawing, Spelling. The heater is in the middle of the room and there are three windows on each side that do not open at the top. This school was moved in 1952. The old school was taken as part payment on the new school. It sometimes has been known as Friend's School or Grimshaw School. The old school was moved to the Grimshaw Farm and used as a garage and as a polling booth. This school was built of logs. It had been on the property of Frank Lyons. The second school was 30 ft x 18 ft. with a small porch facing south. It was painted white and trimmed with green in 1911 with a coal shed and toilets. Repainted in 1938. A well is in the south-east corner of the lot. The school has a flag and flag pole. Household Science and Agriculture were taught in 1930-32 and Agriculture is being taught now. This school has taken part in School fairs until the last three years. School bought by Martina Doyle and moved to the village in June 1955 (note from Mable McRae-it was moved by her uncle James Hawkins). See Teachers list below.
